Are floors still the âforgottenâ detail?
On too many projects, the floor is still the bit that gets âworked out laterâ. Yet itâs carrying insulation, underfloor heating, screed, acoustic performance and level transitions, all in a very tight space.
With higher expectations from affluent homeowners and developers, plus the push from regulations, can we really afford to leave floors as an afterthought? How early are you designing floor build-ups on your schemes, RIBA Stage 3, 4, or still later?
At Clockwork, weâre seeing that when architects and specifiers bring floors into the design conversation earlier, issues such as UFH response times, insulation continuity, and finished levels become much easier to control.

Big kit, tight spaces
You donât really appreciate how much specialised kit goes into modern screeding until you stand next to one of Clockworkâs trucks. Theyâre mobile plants in their own right, mixing, pumping and managing both insulation and screed from one unit, instead of half a dozen different bits of equipment scattered around site.
Whatâs just as impressive is where those trucks end up. Our drivers spend their days threading 26-tonne vehicles into estate roads, tight farm tracks and busy mixed-use sites that look like they were never meant to see a truck at all. Theyâre used to squeezing into awkward corners, setting up safely, then quietly getting on with the job.
Once weâre in position, the kit does the rest: insulation poured first, underfloor heating installed, then screed batched and pumped to where itâs needed. For the site team, it often feels like a lot of moving parts have suddenly been handled by one unit and one team

Why is Clockwork Screed ideal for underfloor heating?
Our cementitious screeds, for use with underfloor heating, have been formulated to deliver excellent thermal conductivity. Because the material self-compacts, there is no risk of bubbles or voids around pipework.
Additionally, its strength allows it to be laid as thin as 25mm, which helps improve the performance and responsiveness of your underfloor heating.

Clockwork Liquid Screed. Flat, fast, ready for trades.
Traditional screed? Numerous days drying, uneven finishes, and trades standing around. Liquid screed changes that completely.
Our high-performance mix goes down smooth, covers 1000m² per day, and handles massive areas (100m²+ with UFH, 150m² without) joint-free. Unlike anhydrite screeds, it works anywhere, outdoors, wet areas, no restrictions.
Foot traffic in 24-48 hours. Floor finishes at just 2.5% moisture (anhydrite needs 0.5% and months of waiting). That's real programme acceleration.
Call 0161 546 6945 or email [email protected] to spec it for your next project.

The benefits of a smooth screed finish
A smooth screed finish is more than just pleasing to look at. It provides the right base for everything that follows.
As this project shows, liquid screed creates a clean, level and consistent surface across the whole floor area. That makes the next stages of the build simpler, whether the final finish is tile, timber, vinyl or carpet.
For projects with underfloor heating, a smooth liquid screed finish also helps create close contact around the pipes. This supports efficient heat transfer and more even warmth across the room.
The main benefits include:
â
A level, seamless base ready for final floor finishes
â
Even coverage around underfloor heating pipework
â
Less manual levelling compared with traditional methods
â
A neat, professional result that keeps the project moving
A quality finish starts below the surface.

Reach.
Flow.
Finish.
Liquid floor screed can be pumped up to 100 metres from the truck location, making it ideal for large, multiâstorey, or hardâtoâreach sites. With efficient installation and minimal labour, you get a flat, highâquality finish ready for the next trade faster than traditional sand and cement screed.
Whether youâre on a tight programme or dealing with tricky access, Clockworkâs mobile screed technology keeps your floors moving forward.

Old habits die hard, but building tech has moved on. Todayâs liquid screeds donât need that bulky 75mm thickness anymore. At Clockwork Screed, weâre seeing the best results at 40â50mm, especially over underfloor heating.
Whatâs the benefit?
â
More responsive, efficient heating
â
Smoother, quicker installation
â
Sustainable by design: less material, less carbon, less waste

Planning Floors for the Future Homes Standards Now
March 2027 may feel a way off, but projects being designed now could be affected by the Future Homes and Buildings Standards.
For anyone involved in new-build housing or commercial development, it is worth thinking about floor design early:
đââď¸ Is the insulation specification suitable for the required thermal performance?
đââď¸ Will the floor build-up work effectively with underfloor heating?
đââď¸ Has screed been considered as part of the overall heating and insulation strategy?
Early coordination helps avoid compromises later and gives every part of the floor package the best chance of performing as intended.
Our latest blog looks at the role flooring will play as the industry prepares for the 2027 standards.

Better Building Performance Starts from the Ground Up
A high-performing building starts from the ground up.
As the Future Homes and Buildings Standards approach, floor design will become even more important. The right combination of insulation, underfloor heating and screed can help reduce heat loss, support low-carbon heating systems and create a more efficient building overall.
It is not just about ticking a compliance box. It is about planning a floor package that works properly, installs efficiently and performs for the long term.
We have broken down what the changes could mean for developers, contractors and designers in our latest blog.
Read the blog in the first comment below.
Future Homes And Buildings Standards 2027: What Will They Mean For Floor Design? From March 2027, new homes and commercial buildings in England will be expected to meet more demanding energy and carbon standards. For architects, developers, contractors and self-builders, that makes the floor build-up more important than ever.
