Even Simple Shows Need Technical Know-How

Most audiences never notice good audio.

That's the point.

Whether it's a conference, awards dinner, hybrid event or a local charity performance, people remember the speaker, the message and the experience. They rarely remember the microphone, the sound desk or the signal routing.

But behind even the simplest looking production sits a surprising amount of preparation and technical know-how.

Microphone selection and placement.

Monitor mixes.

Playback control.

Recording and content capture.

Signal routing.

Managing different presenters, performers and audience expectations.

None of it should be visible to the audience.

When it's done properly, the technology disappears and the people on stage become the focus.

After more than 40 years in live events, one lesson remains constant:

The best technical production is often the production nobody notices.

When the event has consequences, preparation matters.

The conversation around hybrid events often focuses on technology.

Streaming platforms.

Cameras.

Microphones.

Internet connections.

In reality, the technology is usually the easy part.

The real challenge is creating an experience that works equally well for two audiences at the same time.

The people in the room.

And the people joining remotely.

Both have invested their time.

Both want to feel involved.

Both deserve a quality experience.

Over the years we've learned that successful hybrid events are rarely about adding a camera to the back of a room.

They are about thoughtful design.

How delegates interact.

How questions are managed.

How presenters engage with both audiences.

How content is delivered.

How the energy in the room translates to those watching from elsewhere.

The technology simply supports the experience.

Because at the end of the day, whether someone is sitting in the front row or joining from the other side of the world, the objective remains exactly the same:

But after more than 40 years of delivering events, we've learned that successful events are rarely about the technology alone.

The client managing countless moving parts.

The technician who stays until everything is working exactly as it should.

The best events happen when everybody works together towards the same goal.

That's why we've always believed our role is bigger than supplying equipment or technical support.

It's about becoming part of the team.

Because when the event matters, everybody is on the same side.

And that's something technology will never replace.

One of our long-standing clients called this week.

Someone very experienced in live production across a huge range of events.

Over the years together we’ve built:

3-dimensional scenic sets.
Wide-screen multi-blend projection.
Steel frame stretched fabric environments with ultra short throw laser projection.

And of course, in more recent years…

large animated LED environments.

We’ve combined all sorts of techniques together over time.

Some subtle.
Some ambitious.
Some slightly mad.

This week she said:

“It’s all been great… but I think it’s time for change again.”

I asked what she had in mind.

She laughed and said:

“You tell me… you’re my expert.”

Then came the interesting bit.

“What about combining 3-dimensional scenic areas, split-screen LED environments, moving lighting and curved visual surfaces…”

“No rush. Let me have your ideas after the bank holiday.”

And honestly…

That’s one of the things I still love most about this industry.

Technology keeps evolving.

Presentation styles change.

Audiences change.

And every so often…

Someone gives you permission to rethink everything all over again.

That’s usually where the interesting ideas begin.

England have made their statement.

The energy is building.
The crowds are growing.
The next match is another opportunity to create something unforgettable.

These were the early years for a lot of our engineers.

Young, keen, and thrown into an industry that doesn’t really allow for second best.

Training wasn’t formal.

It happened in the workshop.

In what was, at the time, a large ex-scout hut next to the offices.

That’s where the standards were set.

Long hours.
Learning the hard way.
Getting things wrong… and then getting them right.

And what came out of that group of people has been incredible to watch.

Three have gone on to run their own production companies.

Producing outstanding live events.

One is now Head of Production at a major broadcaster.

Another, Head of Broadcast at a leading network.

We’ve got one touring globally with artists like Harry Styles, Take That and Eagles.

And another running technical at Sphere.

Five of that original backbone are still with us today.

Leading teams.

Teaching in the Comtec Academy.

Passing it all on.

In this industry, people don’t last unless they’re talented, work hard, and keep evolving.

Every one of these guys has done exactly that.

And the shows along the way…

We’ll save those for another day.

But they’ve included:

Driving a 32-ton tipper out of a hole in the ground to reveal a contractor truck.

Hiding a commercial tractor unit behind a waterfall.

Concealing a fighter jet from an audience of 500.

And yes… even a nuclear submarine.

(It hides itself now.)

I don’t get to miss any of them.

They’re always popping up somewhere.

Still doing great work.

We’re proud of all of you.

One of the topics that comes up regularly in the Comtec Academy is projection.

And it always raises a few eyebrows.

The younger engineers can’t quite believe where this started.

Back when we were Barco agents, we were running three-head RGB CRT projectors.

Around 650 ANSI lumens on a good day.

Getting a picture wasn’t the challenge.

Getting a perfect picture was.

Those units had convergence boards with 30 to 50 individual adjustment pots.

All manual.

All critical.

Each one controlling alignment and geometry across different areas of the screen.

The process was slow, methodical, and unforgiving.

You would spend hours, sometimes days, removing colour fringing and lining up red, green, and blue to create a clean image.

And if someone turned the lights on while you were doing it…

You started again.

At times we’d literally have a blanket over our heads to see what we were doing properly.

Different world.

Fast forward to now.

Single head laser projectors.
20,000 ANSI lumens and well beyond.
Auto screen alignment.
Lens calibration at the push of a button.

And yes, the technology is far more advanced.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s simpler.

Because the real skill has always been the same.

Understanding what’s happening behind the image.

Knowing what “right” actually looks like.

And being able to step in when the automation isn’t enough.

That’s what we focus on in the Comtec Academy.

Not just how to operate equipment.

But how it works.
Why it works.
And how to fix it when it doesn’t.

Because technology will always move forward.

But experience is what makes it reliable.
