Kim Jee-woon (who brought you A Tale of Two Sisters, The Good, The Bad and the Weird) has built a successful and brilliant career with films that challenge the conventions of film genres with previous films tackling horror, westerns and noir with a powerful visual effect. He now turns his attention to the revenge film with startling effect. The film centres on the characters as opposed to the chase to find the culprit responsible as the two protagonists transform into what each loathes the most.

One evening, a young women, Ju-yeon, falls into the manic murder’s sights, resulting in a brutal homicide.

Soo-hyun (Lee Byung-hun, No Other Choice, Squid Game) is a federal agent and Ju-yeon his fiancee. Upon being informed of her death, unable to deal with his grief, Soo-hyun leaves a bloody trail in his wake as he turns the hunter into the hunted with the intention of torturing his lover’s killer in the same manner she was.

Social codes and conventions become fateful in a captivating and satirical nail-biter about a Danish family who becomes ensnared in a situation they find it increasingly difficult to escape.

During a vacation to Toscana, Louise and Bjørn meet a Dutch couple who has a son of the same age as their daughter. A few months later they are invited to visit the Dutch family and decide to go, but what is anticipated to be a pleasant reunion radically changes when they become more closely acquainted with the Dutch’s couple’s habits and odd view of, not least, child rearing. The strained and tense atmosphere is brought to a head in this anxious thriller that plays with our proclivity to always be amiable and not cause trouble.

This thesis on auto-canibalism and voyuerism stands as a slight outlier in the New Extremity movement, being one of the few films directed, written and starring a woman. A precursor to the works of Julia Ducournau and Coralie Fargeat (and undoubtedly an influence on RAW) this film is a deeply distressing, incredibly resonant and shocking portrayal of the dysmorphia forced upon women under patriarchal society.

Esther (director Marina de Van) develops a fixation on her own flesh following an injury at a party that triggers within her the desire for self-mutilation. Featuring a very small cast of disturbing French film all stars including Laurent Lucas (Raw, Calvaire, Pola X), Léa Drucker (Last Summer, Incredible But True) and Dominique Reymond (Demonlover, Ma Mere, Junkyard Dog) it's a very singular film that almost defies definition.

We all float down here!

In 1990, ABC presented a two-night TV miniseries event, based on Stephen King’s 1986 novel of the same name, written by Lawrence D. Cohen and directed by Tommy Lee Wallace. The series went on to become perhaps one of the greatest TV Horror Adaptations of all time.

Set in 1960, seven outcast kids known as “The Losers’ Club” fight against an ancient shape-shifting alien who poses as a child-killing clown, while also dealing with bullies and abusive parents. Thirty years later, they reunite to stop the creature once and for all when it returns to their hometown.

It was, at the time, total nightmare fodder fun. IT, which was later released in a popular two-tape VHS set, featured the iconic Tim Curry as an indelibly humoured version of the killer clown.
