James was struggling to find work when someone offered him a job with good pay and accommodation. At first, it seemed like a fresh start. Soon, however, his wages were withheld, he was told he owed money for rent and transport, and he was threatened whenever he asked to leave. His phone was monitored, and he felt trapped with no way out.

Modern slavery can affect anyone. Exploitation doesn’t only involve people being brought from overseas. It can happen in construction, car washes, agriculture, hospitality, county lines, and many other settings.

Knowing the signs and raising awareness can help protect people from exploitation. If you suspect someone is being exploited, report your concerns to the appropriate authorities or safeguarding services.

**James is a fictional character, but this scenario reflects patterns seen in real cases.**

Gambling harm is more than a financial issue; it can affect mental health, relationships, employment, and overall wellbeing. Data from Manchester highlights that some communities are at greater risk of experiencing gambling-related harm, making awareness, early support, and open conversations more important than ever.

By reducing stigma and helping people recognise the signs of harm, we can support individuals and families to access help sooner. Together, we can build healthier and more resilient communities. CHAPTER ONE

We’re delighted to share that in the coming days we would be delivering vital awareness sessions on gambling harms across our communities in Manchester.

This project will help raise awareness of the impact of gambling-related harm, encourage open conversations, and connect people with the support available. We are especially pleased that this work will also include the group of modern slavery survivors we support. Through our experience, we recognise that trauma can be associated with an increased risk of gambling-related harm, making trauma-informed awareness and early intervention especially important.

We’re committed to working with our communities to reduce stigma, increase understanding, and ensure that people know where to seek help when they need it.

The Unbound Programme is an innovative survivor empowerment initiative supporting individuals affected by modern slavery and exploitation. Built on the five pillars of the Unbound Framework (Unlock, Unlearn, Unfold, Uplift, and Unbound). It provides transformational coaching, skills development, and trauma-informed support, helping survivors rebuild confidence, independence, resilience, and long-term wellbeing.
