🦶HEEL PAIN & PES PLANUS
Understanding the mechanics behind the pain🦶
Heel pain isn’t always just about the heel. Sometimes, we need to look at the way the whole foot is functioning.
This gentleman attended Feet First Podiatry with pain around his right heel.
On assessment, his foot posture demonstrated pes planus (a flatter foot type) with increased pronation. As the foot pronates excessively during weight-bearing, this can place increased stress through the structures on the underside of the foot, including the plantar fascia.
👣 So what are we seeing?
In the photographs, you can see the difference in foot posture and the way the heel and rearfoot position during standing.
Excessive pronation can contribute to:
• Increased loading through the medial side of the foot
• Increased strain on the plantar fascia
• Altered lower-limb mechanics
• Persistent or recurrent heel pain in some patients
Our treatment plan
Following assessment, we are going to provide high-quality custom orthoses designed specifically around this gentleman’s foot mechanics.
The aim will be to:
✅ Improve control of excessive pronation
✅ Support the medial arch
✅ Improve load distribution through the foot
✅ Reduce excessive stress on the plantar fascia
✅ Help optimise the position and function of the rearfoot during walking
The goal isn’t simply to “support a flat foot” — it’s about understanding how that particular foot is functioning and designing an orthotic intervention around the individual.
At Feet First Podiatry, we assess the whole picture rather than treating the painful area in isolation.
🦶 Foot pain deserves a proper biomechanical assessment.

Stiff, painful big toe? Here is what's happening beneath the skin. 👇When a joint goes through chronic stress or osteoarthritis, the body tries to protect itself by growing extra bits of bone. These are called osteophytes (or bone spurs), and they are exactly what cause that "blocked," stiff feeling when you try to bend your toe. This patient's scan shows the perfect side-by-side comparison:• The RIGHT toe joint (top) shows those rough, irregular bony changes.• The LEFT toe joint (bottom) has stayed relatively smooth and healthy. The best part? We didn't have to send this patient away to a hospital imaging queue to find this out. We scanned them right here in the clinic during their assessment. At Feet First, our point-of-care ultrasound scanning means you get an accurate diagnosis instantly, allowing us to target treatments—like custom orthotics or offloading therapies—right away.Don't live with unexplained foot pain. Let's take a look. 👣

🌟 Transform Your Nails for Summer 2027! 🌟
At Feet First Podiatry in Newry, we’re thrilled to share a success story that highlights the power of expert treatment and patience.
In February, a patient came to us with a severe fungal nail infection and an involuted (curved) nail cutting into the skin. Traditional topical treatments were ineffective, so we collaborated with their GP to start oral terbinafine. We also used a nail brace to straighten the nail, similar to braces for teeth.
✨ The Results: Almost fully resolved from both the fungal infection and the involution!
Why Start Now?
Treating onychomycosis (nail fungus) is a journey, not a quick fix. It can take 12-18 months for complete resolution.
Begin treatment now to ensure beautiful nails by next summer.
