A little bit of old character in a new space. 🧱

Brick slips are a great way to bring warmth and texture into a renovation. They look like traditional brickwork because, essentially, that’s exactly what they are — real bricks cut down to around 10–12mm thick.

We installed three areas on this recent Grice Construction project, including two feature walls and this fireplace and hearth ready for the log burner.

Really like the extra detail here — herringbone through the hearth, framed with a simple border to finish it off. 👌🏻

Recently completed accessible shower room with a fully flush finish — tiled floor to shower tray, and tiled floor to the adjoining floor with no steps or transitions.

Simon Snowden did the hard work getting the levels right for us, leaving us to install the backer boards, tanking and tiles. We added a slight fall towards the shower tray with levelling compound, helping direct any surface water back where it needs to go.

Finished off with a pop of colour in the herringbone feature. Practicality doesn’t have to mean compromising on character.

Curves for days. 👌🏻

A round bath calls for a curved wall to sit against. Simple idea, but plenty of thought and preparation behind getting the shape right before wrapping it in natural stone mosaic.

The preparation creates the curve. The tiles bring it to life.

With a fiddly material like this, we chose to pre-cut around 95% of the wall before installation — including the cut-outs for the taps, waste and mirror light.

It meant that when it came to fixing, everything was ready to go. Faster installation, cleaner working and more control over the finished detail.

Sometimes the most efficient way to work is simply to do more of the thinking beforehand.

On this one we’ve tanked the wet area, fitted tile backer boards to the floor and installed AmberUFH, keeping clear of the circular bath and toilet areas before testing the heating cables.

The curved walls have then been formed with 4mm backer board and skimmed with tile adhesive to create a smooth, consistent curve ready for the stone mosaics to wrap around.

A lot of this work will never be seen once the bathroom is finished — but good preparation is what gives the finished installation the best chance of lasting.

That’s one of the great things about tiles. One tile can give you so many options — layout, pattern, orientation — and combining different styles opens up even more.

Trends come and go, but tiles have been used for thousands of years. There’s something pretty timeless about being able to take a material and make a space completely your own.

When two patterns collide. 👌🏻

Same tiles, two completely different layouts. Metro meets herringbone, with the setting out and transitions doing the work to bring them together.

It’s the details you don’t always notice that matter. 👌🏻

Where possible, every L-shaped cut we make in large-format porcelain gets a core-drilled corner. The radius helps relieve stress at the internal corner and reduces the risk of the tile cracking.

On this floor there are no skirting boards hiding the perimeter cuts — just a clean tile-to-plaster finish — so everything is on show. We dropped down to a 10mm core to keep the cuts tight while still creating that radius.

Ideally, I’d prefer a 20mm core where the detail allows, but tiling isn’t always about doing something one way. It’s about understanding why you’re doing it and adapting to the job in front of you.

After all the planning, setting out and careful installation, the grout is what finally brings the whole floor together.
