Ok you just saw this. First impressions....what do you notice first? What does it make you feel? What does it make you think about?

I've had so much climate anxiety this summer, I've found it really hard to work. I've felt paralysed. At some point I managed to force myself through the paralysis and let rip on the canvas without any sense of trying to be anything, achieve anything in particular, and it feels like a big f**k it moment and I'm painting how I really want to. I don't feel obliged to explain what I'm doing but I know all the feelings I'm having about the planet and our future and everything else are in there. I'm trusting my instincts. Just letting it happen. That's all I have.

Tomorrow is the launch of the Haarlem Artspace Open in Wirksworth and I'm really looking forward to it! Please join us from 6pm, and as the gallery is very handily above a fabulous pub (stair access only) there will be some drinkage occurring afterwards also ๐

(defiance is a good antidote to anxiety too, I'm finding)

This Too Shall Pass
Some things pass, some things you have to adjust to, absorb, and accept as the new reality.

In the pub doodling and found a random tube of black paint in my bag (no idea) - turns out it's pretty cool to draw with!

I read somewhere recently that all roads eventually lead back to what you were interested in as a child. I think that's pretty accurate. If I think about what I loved doing as a kid (only child), it was mainly daydreaming, inventing imaginary worlds, getting lost in books, playing in nature, gazing into the coals in the hearth or at the clouds.... And I realise that's pretty much what drives my painting now, and it's what I hope for people when they look at it - to daydream, drift, see things that might be there or might not, imagine worlds within worlds, float away from reality.....
