💩 How Sewage Shaped Nottingham 💩

In the 1800s, the River Leen was heavily polluted with sewage, but the problem didn't stop at Nottingham's boundaries.

Upsteam communities were also polluting the Leen, so Nottingham couldn't solve the problem alone.

Different local authorities would have to cooperate, but they didn't always want to.

Arguments dragged on for decades.

Eventually, a Joint Sewage Board was established in 1872, so Nottingham, Sneinton, Lenton, Radford, and Bulwell were united in tackling the sewage crisis.

And just 5 years later came the Nottingham Extension Act, which incorporated these areas into a larger Nottingham.

The story of sewage is also the story of how Nottingham came to be the city it is today.

We explore this in more detail in Trentbelly, our first series, which you can listen to wherever you get your podcasts.
