Perthshire Rugby
Perthshire Rugby Club, founded in 1868, is a welcoming community-focused club in Perth, Scotland.
Based at the North Inch, it welcomes all ages, promoting rugby, teamwork, and local engagement. In 2003 "React-2-Rugby" was initiated and Perthshire RUFC embarked upon one of the most challenging rugby development programmes that this country had ever seen. In the first 3 years many of the club development initiatives received national recognition and several were used as blue-prints for activities in the rest of Scotland. In the Spring of 2006 Perthshire RUFC agreed upon a an equally demanding 3 year programme and so began the second stage of the Community Rugby Development in Perth. The second stage emphasised previous successes but more importantly provided a natural progression in this next development period. There were 6 key aims:
1) An integrated Development Structure in all Primary and Secondary Schools.
2) Maintain and Develop the Coordinated Development Structure of Perthshire RUFC Junior and Youth Sections.
3) To Adopt a Policy of Lifestyle Management for Young Players and Generate an Environment for this to Prosper.
4) To be recognised as the Main Sporting Organisation Promoting Sport Locally and to be recognised as a Regional and National Sporting Centre of Excellence.
5) That the Activities of the Development Team, The Centre of Excellence and The Perthshire Rugby Academy are Self-Financing.
6) Recognition of all Individual and Team Successes within Perthshire RUFC. REACT-2-RUBGY
At the start the key was to re-establish rugby in all the Secondary schools of Perth and provide taster sessions in the key feeder primary schools
The successes were tremendous with over 9000 plus active participants from 10 secondary and 61 primary schools. We were seen as the key provider for sport locally and have a Service Level Agreement with the Local Council to provide curricular rugby education, and one of the major providers in Scotland (SRU Club of the Month March 2006). DEVELOPMENT GOING FORWARD:
Having established Perthshire Rugby Club at the forefront of development in Scotland it is now time to kick things on again and look to the future. REACT 2 RUGBY has now evolved to the "TRY Rugby" program providing 9 weeks of STRUCTURED rugby to each primary school child from P4 to P7 who are feeding into the main 4 high schools in Perth. The kids will receive 4 weeks of curricular, 1 week of festival and 4 weeks of Rugby Development Team supported after school club activity. It is our aim though that the after school activity can continue through the recruitment of volunteers and teachers and so building not only a larger pool of younger players but a larger network of volunteers in the region. As a natural pathway from primary school and mini rugby Perthshire Rugby Development Team decided to launch and support a Perth and Kinross County wide inter schools league. This is providing competitive rugby, in school for S1 to S4 pupils with each pupil who takes part participating in around 7 fixtures per year. Further to that we are also providing a county wide schools 7's tournament for S1, S2, U16 and Senior levels, again hoping to create a larger pool of players and volunteers throughout Perthshire. One of our largest targets this year is to bring rugby to non traditional rugby schools so to coincide with the launch of the Sports Comprehensive (A combined venture between Perth Grammar and St Johnβs RC) we helped launch a "Sports Comprehensive" rugby team at S1/2 level. This has shown huge success with all signs pointing to rugby becoming an established sport at the school. To help aid and strengthen the ranks of the 1st XV in the near and distant future "The Rugby Development Team" are taking steps to establish a sustainable performance pathway from S1 to senior rugby. Step one of this was to re Launch an academy to suit the needs of the club. The latest incarnation will see the academy players receive a balanced mix of Strength and Conditioning, Speed Development, Wrestling and Groundwork, Contact Management, Game Management and of course Skill Development. The first candidates are currently in their first year of the academy and already you can see them grow in stature and confidence. We felt though that a performance academy simply was not enough. Within the next 3 years we hope to launch a "School of Rugby" where kids will receive rugby as part of their school day. These kids will apply to be part of this school and will participate in these curricular performance sessions until they reach S4 level, which is when they will graduate into our performance academy. Again we felt that these 2 stages were not enough to help their development or transition into senior rugby at Perthshire Rugby Club. This is why also within our 3 year plan we are looking to establish locally a rugby performance college course. Talks are currently under way as to the qualification structure of this course but even in this early stage Perth College seem hopeful and enthusiastic about course of this nature running at their campus. The SVQ program has become the Community Coach program but Perthshire Rugby Club is still a leader when it comes to providing a learning centre for these student coaches. We currently have 3 employed at the club who are essentially the face of rugby in our Primary School Program. Thanks to the hard work put in by Doc McKelvey in his role as Development Officer, the process of selecting future Community Coaches is made easy through the Youth Coaching Course. This course is ran by both the Perthshire Development Officer and the Crieff DO annually and helps recruit around 20 young volunteers who go back to their schools and either coach or referee. On the whole developments future looks bright in Perth with systems and structures in place to Recruit - Retain - Retrain players, volunteers, and coaches for Perthshire Rugby Club.

π Mini Training β 27th September π
Today our mini players got a little glimpse of their future at Perthshire Rugby! π€π€
We were delighted to welcome some of our wonderful senior players, both men and women, who came along to put our minis through their paces, share their knowledge and, most importantly, have some fun with the next generation of Perthshire players.
Weβre hoping this will be the first of many opportunities for our sections to mix and learn from one another. Itβs so lovely to see our youngest players having positive role models within the club to look up to and aspire to be. π
Perthshire Rugby is such a wonderful club to be part of, and we want to continue building that commitment, dedication and sense of belonging from our youngest players right through to our oldest. π€π€
A huge thank you to our senior players for giving up their time and investing in the future of our club. ππ

Final push!
Next Sunday, one of our amazing Perthshire Rugby Club Coaches will be taking on a special challenge in memory of his son, Finlay. β€οΈ
They are raising money for two charities that hold a very special place in their family's heart.
π The Canmore Trust provides vital su***de prevention and postvention support, helping people experiencing suicidal thoughts, as well as families and communities affected by su***de. Through education, support and raising awareness, they are working tirelessly to save lives and ensure that no one has to face these struggles alone.
π St. Johnstone Community Trust (Saints in the Community) is a Perth-based charity that uses the power of sport to bring people together, improve wellbeing and create opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds. Their work highlights the importance of connection, inclusion and community, and the positive impact these can have on both mental and physical health.
This challenge is a wonderful way to honour Finlay's memory while supporting two incredible organisations making a real difference in people's lives.
If you're able to support this amazing cause, every donation, no matter how big or small, will be hugely appreciated.
Thank you for helping keep Finlay's memory alive while supporting others who need it most. π€π€
