Another song from the album. This one is called "Ripple" and started life as a riff I was working on with The Stantons and Umi's husband, Matt, came up with the title and lyrical theme. The riff never made it to a song as the band went into stasis shortly after so it was nice to give it a new lease of life.

The lyrics were also given a fresh coat too as I had a couple of verses and an idea for a chorus so they were developed and expanded upon.

Yep, I've definitely taken this cover too far. It also should have featured a bottle of Buckie somewhere too.

Anyway, this is a re-working of an old Calvin song. I recorded my own take of this for an E.P of the really early Calvin songs that we never got around to recording and put my own twist to them but the recording never left my hard drive as I was never happy with the production. A common theme for my recording history.

"Credit Card Thief" was a staple in the very early Calvin live set and was a lot of fun to play.

Another song from the album, "Flying Solo". This one's called "Lunacy" and the tune was first written waaaaaay back in my teenage days.

I wrote the lyrics around the time Therea May became Prime Minister as I couldn't believe the amount of utter charlatans in the race to become PM that people were taking seriously.

Thankfully, that's all changed these days!

I came up with the riff for "For Sale" way back when The Stantons were working on songs after the release of our album "Le Cirque De Mu**ta" but never progressed it to a full song at the time.

I wrote the lyrics a couple of years ago after feeling particularly annoyed with the state of the world.

"We're Needing Vambo".

From the very first moment I heard them, I've been a huge fan of The Sensational Alex Harvey Band and always wanted to pay homage to them in a song.

Alex created a character who appearing in a couple of songs called Vambo. He was a fictional 'superhero' of the streets and protector of the common folk who believed in the strength of community. His mantra was, as Alex poetically put it, "don't pish in the water supply".

More than ever over the last couple of decades, it seems we could use another Vambo coming to the rescue.

Over the course of the next week or so I'm going to share songs from the album.

First up is a song I wrote when I was a student. I had formed a band with Ali called Davis Tree and wrote a handful of songs for us to play. Sadly, Davis Tree didn't get any further than a few rehearsals so the songs stayed in the bedroom all throughout my student days.

Fast forward a few years and I moved to Edinburgh and formed a new band called Calvin. In order to get Calvin up and gigging quickly, we all brought songs to the setlist so it became a fixture in the very early years of Calvin's live set but wasn't around by the time we got to recording our first studio release.

Fast forward again and when I decided to learn audio production, it was the first song that I recorded and used to hone my skills. There's a home recording of it on my Soundcloud and was released on Bandcamp as my first ever public release... which coincidentally was ten years ago this year!

Hello all, it's been a while since I've posted anything here so I thought it was about time to change that.

I've released an album of original songs to streaming platforms.

But there's a bit of a twist.

I've been more than a little nervous about sharing this, because I know some people won't agree with my decision but I decided to use AI in making these songs.

And honestly, I've really struggled with it myself.

But these songs started with my lyrics, my ideas, my original recordings and my demos. They've been sitting on my computer for years because I simply don't have the financial resources to record them in a professional studio, and although I've put in god knows how many hours, I've never been happy enough with my own DAW production skills to release them.

So I had a choice: leave them sitting there, unheard… or find another way to bring them to life.

I'm not claiming it's the same as recording in a studio with musicians, and I completely understand those who don't like AI. But without it, these songs would probably still be sitting on my hard drive.
