Match day 3 report

Peterhead 15–45 Orkney Rugby Football Club

Peterhead continued their rebuilding process with a committed performance against Orkney.

From the kick-off Orkney took the ball up the pitch and made good ground. Peterhead were tackling well and stopped the visitors from scoring and cleared their lines. The first half was keenly contested and Orkney eventually broke the line scoring a converted try. Peterhead replied almost immediately with Captain Thacker finishing a strong forwards move in the corner for an unconverted score.
Orkney were again on the attack and managed another score. From some strong play the Peterhead forwards were knocking on the Orkney line. Ho**er Ritchie saw a gap on the narrow side and received a good ball from Harkins to bulldoze over for Peterhead’s second try.

Orkney finished the half with their noses in front.

The second half started with Peterhead receiving the kick-off. Orkney were pressuring hard and from a home mistake they recovered the ball scoring an early try. With numbers being reduced for both sides due to injury the spaces were opening up, and Orkney built a commanding lead. Peterhead did have good periods of pressure and the forward’s set piece was working well.

From some excellent pod work the ball was moved through the hands. With a half break Davidson released Jay Stephen into space. With good awareness he darted through the visiting defenders for his first try in a Peterhead shirt.

Peterhead were pushing to finish the day with a try bonus point, but the ref blew for “No-side” with the home team on the attack.
The Peterhead forwards performed well, providing a strong platform throughout the match. The scrum was effective, with the pack showing good technique, strength and cohesion. Their ability to secure quality forwards’ ball allowed Peterhead to put pressure on the Orkney defence.

There were also encouraging signs from the Peterhead backs, who showed much-improved cohesion and looked increasingly comfortable working together in attack. Their passing and support play produced several promising passages and highlighted the progress being made within the developing squad.

Orkney fielded a young, fast and agile team, with their backs showing plenty of pace and attacking threat. When given space, they were quick to exploit it and put Peterhead under pressure.

Despite the 15–45 defeat, Peterhead battled hard throughout and can take plenty of positives from the performance. The strength of the scrum and improved cohesion among the backs provide encouragement as Peterhead continue their rebuilding process.

Once again we would like to thank our wonderful mens sponsors for joining our journey

Match 2
matchReport
RAF LOSSIEMOUTH VS PETERHEAD

Peterhead travelled to face a strong RAF Lossiemouth side in their first away fixture of the season. The club would like to thank both Deeside and Lossiemouth rugby clubs for their support in helping to strengthen a reduced travelling squad and enable the fixture to go ahead.

The match proved to be a tough test for Peterhead against a well-organised and physical Lossiemouth team. Despite the challenging result there were positives for Peterhead to take from the afternoon. In particular, the scrum performed strongly providing a solid platform for the forwards and rewarding the hard work put in during midweek training.

As the match progressed, Peterhead began to find ways to resist the relentless waves of Lossiemouth fast paced attack. Although the hosts ultimately secured a convincing and deserved victory, the experience of facing such a strong and well-drilled opponent will prove valuable for Peterhead as the season develops.

Following two tough opening tests, there is plenty for Peterhead to build on as the season continues next Saturday when we welcome Skye RFC to Catto Park.

DOTD - Kane Webster
