When was the last time you checked your Articles of Association?
Your Articles of Association set out how your business runs, while defining the roles of directors and shareholders.
The Articles usually cover:
🧩 How directors make decisions
🧩 How shareholders vote
🧩 How meetings take place
🧩 How shares are issued or transferred
🧩 How directors are appointed or removed
🧩 How profits are distributed through dividends
Additionally, the Articles help prevent misunderstandings, with guidance on how to handle common situations within the business.

Do you find normal accounting boring?
Well, forensic accounting is a specialist area which focuses on examining financial information in detail to answer questions about disputes and suspected fraud.
Unlike routine accounting, forensic accountants looks beyond the surface, focusing on uncovering the truth rather than simply reporting figures.
A forensic accountant's work often includes:
🧩 Investigating fraud (such as embezzlement or false reporting)
🧩 Reviewing financial records and contracts
🧩 Identifying inconsistencies and unusual patterns
🧩 Reconstructing missing or incomplete data
🧩 Preparing reports for legal use
🧩 Acting as an expert witness in court
They focus on anything that does not match the financial story, as who doesn't love a bit of detective work?

Do you know what Chargeable Gains are?
Chargeable gains are the profit you make when you dispose of a capital asset.
When you receive the money, HMRC first decides whether it counts as income or capital:
🧩 Income includes earnings from employment or other trading activities
🧩 Capital includes profits from selling assets you already own
This distinction matters because both options follow different tax rules and rates.

Do you understand Stealth Taxes?
Stealth tax is a term for describing taxes or charges that are not immediately obvious.
These taxes usually increase your tax bill without official tax rates changing.
Instead of announcing a new tax, the Government adjusts the relevant thresholds or allowances.
As a result, many people pay more tax without realising it.

Next month, Chancellor John Healey will deliver the Autumn Budget.
Several important changes already sit outside Budget speculation.
The Government is:
🧩 Removing VAT from domestic electricity charges from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027
🧩 Announcing a £2 cap on many single bus fares from January 2027
🧩 Providing additional business rate support for pubs, social clubs and live music venues
However, businesses and households should still treat every rumour with care.

Do you have Surplus Cash in your Business?
Surplus cash can give a business valuable breathing room.
If you are planning on putting this cash into a savings account, you must consider three things:
🧩 Return
🧩 Access
🧩 Security
You should never chase a higher rate without considering when you need the money.

How well do you understand Pension Contributions?
Pension contributions are the payments you make into a pension scheme to build savings for retirement.
Contributions usually come from three main sources:
🧩 Yourself (through deductions from your salary or personal payments)
🧩 Your employer (if you belong to a workplace pension scheme)
🧩 The government (through pension tax relief)
Once paid in, your pension provider invests the money on your behalf.

You might assume that subcontractors always handle their own pension contributions.
Whether the contractor needs to pay contributions depends on the subcontractor’s employment status and how they work in practice.
You usually don't need to enrol genuinely self-employed subcontractors into your workplace pension or contribute towards their pension.
However, you may need to make pension contributions if any of your subcontractors meet the legal definition of a worker.

Do you know how the VAT Reverse Charge works?
Usually, a supplier manages the VAT process from start to finish, while the customer pays the invoice and reclaims VAT where allowed.
However, the VAT Reverse Charge changes this process.
Instead of the supplier charging VAT, the customer accounts for it.
This means:
🧩 The supplier issues an invoice without VAT
🧩 The customer calculates the VAT themselves
🧩 The customer reports it on their VAT return
While no VAT payment passes between the supplier and customer, the transaction still appears on the VAT return.

Have you heard of the CEST Tool?
The Check Employment Status for Tax tool is an online service, provided by HMRC, which helps you decide a worker's employment status for tax purposes.
It can help you answer the question: Does this worker operate as self-employed or as an employee?
This question sits at the heart of IR35, as employment status affects the handling of tax and National Insurance.
Additionally, the tool lets you test different scenarios, so you can check how changes to a contract may affect status.
