Helping our local pollinators as we move into autumn couldn’t be simpler - leaf piles are the perfect habitat for insects to overwinter in, so all you have to do is leave (🍁) them where they fall, or sweep them into a corner of your garden or underneath a hedge.

You’ll likely see hedgehogs, voles and birds rummaging around looking for a tasty snack which is a joy to watch.

Follow along for more simple tips on how you can make a big difference to our local pollinator population here in Guernsey. A little change goes a long way!

Yesterday was World Habitat Day, so what better day to take a wander through town and see which useful plants we can spot thriving in our urban environment?

Some people may call these weeds, but they’re all brilliant sources of food for pollinating insects such as bees, butterflies and flies. So we love to see them!

At Pollinator Project our mission is to create spaces that are attractive to humans and pollinators. A little goes a long way - find out more about how you can get involved via our website or pop us a message if you’d like to find out more.

Together, we can all make a huge difference for nature 🐝

We attended the People’s Emergency Briefing last night and this quote, which is widely attributed to Margaret Mead, struck true: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”

If you’d like to get involved with our vital work helping Guernsey’s pollinators, get in touch. We have a huge variety of opportunities, whether you’d like to do an odd job here and there or are keen to get involved through a more regular commitment.

Pop us a message or visit our website for more information - we’d love to hear from you.

83% of islanders are concerned about the pressures facing our environment - are you one of them? 🌱

On the 29th September at Beau Sejour, The Clean Earth Trust are supporting a screening of The People’s Emergency Briefing—a film bringing together leading experts and the latest evidence on key concerns. The film touches on:

- ⚡Rising weather extremes.
- 💷 Food prices and local security.
- 🧫 Changing health risks, including tropical diseases spreading through France to our shores.
- ☀️ The wider impacts of a hotter climate on our natural environment.

Following the film, there will be a discussion with a panel of local experts to talk about local impacts and the positive opportunities that come out of meeting this challenge head-on.

The event is free to attend, and you can find out more from the events page here: https://fb.me/e/3RU9kgqr1

If you’re out and about lately you may see quite a buzz around ivy hedges, and this is who you’re likely to see!

Ivy is a brilliant plant for pollinators as it flowers late summer when a lot of other plants have finished for the year. This is just one reason why our gardens are so so important for wildlife - by creating natural spaces that provide food and shelter for insects and other creatures, you are contributing hugely to their chances of survival and success as they go about their vital work 🐝

Let us know if you spot any ivy mining bees in banks or hedges around the island. And follow along for more pollinator facts and tips 🌸

Many of you may already know the marvellous Sharon, our Education Lead here at Pollinator Project. Alongside mucking in with our fort field project and visits to your homes to provide guidance on wildlife friendly planting and she is the driving force of our schools education programme.

The schools programme has been running for seven years now and we received our 1300th entry this year into the art competition! Sharon works tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure our team can reach every primary school in Guernsey (and some nurseries too!) to spread the message about the importance of pollinators and how we can do our bit to help them thrive.

And ofcourse hanging every single entry in the library each summer so we can all enjoy a beautiful display. As you can imagine, it takes quite some time!

Voting closes 13th September and is free so don’t delay - simply click the link up top.

Ps, it has come to my attention that there’s no moth emoji. This seems mightily unfair.

Did you see our previous post about these oak trees at Candie Gardens?

Thank you to everyone who commented, many of you were correct - it is a goat moth problem!
