Jean-Baptiste Kempf, the lead developer and president of the VideoLAN non-profit organisation, made a remarkable decision that set VLC Media Player apart from most other tech tools in the modern era.
Despite receiving multiple high-value offers from corporations looking to buy and monetise VLC through advertising, paid upgrades, or subscriptions, Kempf chose to reject them all.
His primary goal was to preserve the platform's freedom for users worldwide.
Under his leadership, VLC Media Player has remained a completely free, open-source tool with no hidden costs, no advertising, no tracking, and no annoying upsells.
This move is especially notable in today’s tech industry, where most software services rely heavily on monetisation strategies such as ads or premium models.
Kempf’s integrity has been praised globally as a model of digital ethics and user-first design.
VLC continues to be maintained by a dedicated community of developers under the VideoLAN organisation and is still downloaded millions of times annually.
His decision wasn't just about turning down money—it was about preserving trust in a widely beloved piece of software that has become essential for many users.
