The National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), through its Plan Coordination Division, has strengthened the organisational development (OD) skills of 35 selected staff through a three-day capacity-building workshop held from 30 September to 2 October 2026.

Held under the GIZ-supported PAIRed Agreement, the workshop was facilitated by Dr. Adom Ghartey and Mr William Amoah and focused on practical skills to enhance workplace interactions, collaboration and professional effectiveness in support of the Commissionโ€™s mandate.

Participants explored key areas including workplace adaptation, effective communication and active listening, facilitation, negotiation, conflict resolution and networking. The sessions emphasised reflection, empathy, professional objectivity and the importance of aligning individual actions with broader organisational objectives.

In his closing remarks, Mr William Amoah encouraged participants to apply the knowledge and skills acquired in their daily work and to sustain their professional development through continuous practice and personal responsibility.

Speaking on behalf of the Director-General, Dr Sandra Kesse-Amankwa also encouraged staff to translate the knowledge and skills gained into practice, both within the Commission and in their everyday professional interactions.

The training forms part of efforts to strengthen staff capacity and foster a more collaborative, effective and results-oriented organisational culture at the NDPC.

The Director-General of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), Dr Audrey Smock Amoah, has stressed the need for stronger implementation, financing and reporting mechanisms to translate Ghanaโ€™s nutrition commitments into measurable results for women and children.

Dr Amoah said this at a breakfast meeting on government leadership, health systems and nutrition held in Accra on Thursday, October 1, 2026, as part of the Micronutrient Forum Global Conference. The meeting was held under the theme, โ€œFrom Commitment to Action: Government Leadership for Sustainable Nutrition in Ghana.โ€

According to Dr Amoah, nutrition must be addressed across the different stages of the development planning process, from planning and budgeting to implementation and reporting. She said the national development planning framework provided the basis for integrating nutrition priorities into programmes and budgets, but stressed the need to ensure that commitments were effectively implemented and monitored.

โ€œWhoever you are, the fact that you are in this room means that there is something we should be doing, and let us do it now,โ€ she said, urging stakeholders to move beyond commitments and focus on concrete actions.

The Executive Director of Women, Media and Change (WOMEC), Dr Charity Binka, said nutrition should be viewed beyond its health dimension, describing it as an investment in human capital and future development. โ€œOur mission should move from commitment to five-year priorities, from five-year priorities to implementation, and from implementation, we have to have measurable results,โ€ she said.

A representative of the Eleanor Crook Foundation said the meeting provided an opportunity for key stakeholders to examine Ghanaโ€™s efforts to address malnutrition and identify further actions needed to ensure that mothers and children had access to essential nutrition interventions.

Ghana is strengthening sustainable financing for nutrition by integrating it into how districts plan, budget and implement development programmes.

Delivering a presentation on โ€œGhanaโ€™s Experience with Decentralized Nutrition Budgeting and Public Financial Management Improvementsโ€ at the ongoing 7th Global Conference of the Micronutrient Forum held in Accra on 29 September 2026, on behalf of the Director-General of the Commission, A Principal Planning Analyst, Mr Nii-Odoi Odotei, explained that districts are integrating multisectoral nutrition priorities into their Medium-Term Development Plans (MTDPs). This gives nutrition interventions a place in district budgets and provides a basis for tracking their implementation.

The approach brings together action across health, education, social protection and food systems. It also connects national priorities, including the Medium-Term National Development Policy Framework 2026โ€“2029 and Ghanaโ€™s Nutrition for Growth commitments, to programmes and resources at the local level.

โ€œIntegrating nutrition into district plans and budgets,โ€ he noted, provides a practical pathway for translating national nutrition priorities into actions at the local level, while creating a basis for tracking the implementation of planned interventions.

The approach is intended to support more consistent financing for nutrition and ensure that nutrition priorities are reflected in district development planning and budgeting.

The 7th Global Conference of the Micronutrient Forum brought together stakeholders to share experiences and explore practical approaches to strengthening nutrition action and financing in the face of changing development and environmental challenges.

The National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) has held a Technical Working Group (TWG) meeting to review the Guidelines for the Operationalisation of Regional Planning Coordinating Units (RPCUs) and District Planning Coordinating Units (DPCUs), issued in 2004 to guide the effective functioning of the Units within Ghanaโ€™s decentralised planning system.

The review seeks to update the Guidelines to reflect changes in the countryโ€™s legal, institutional, planning and public financial management frameworks, and strengthen coordination, planning, monitoring and accountability at the regional and district levels.

The meeting, held on Tuesday, 29th September 2026, brought together representatives of government institutions and GIZ to review the existing Guidelines, deliberate on proposed areas for revision and provide technical and institutional inputs to guide the preparation of the revised document.

Delivering welcome remarks on behalf of the Director-General, Dr. Sandra Kesse-Amankwah said NDPC had conducted an internal review of the 2004 Guidelines but required external expertise to update the document. โ€œA lot has changed over the years. The Vice President, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has called for stronger multisectoral action and sustained investment to tackle malnutrition, stressing that the challenge requires coordinated responses across health, education, agriculture, social protection and the private sector.

She said malnutrition remains one of the most persistent challenges to human development, with consequences that can extend from childhood into adulthood and pregnancy, affecting the health of mothers and children and potentially carrying across generations.

She noted that nutrition outcomes are influenced by several interconnected factors, including what families can afford, what children consume at school and their access to health services. She therefore underscored the need to integrate nutrition into primary healthcare and other essential services.

โ€œThere is therefore an opportunity for us to embed nutrition care into prevention, maternal care, child care, immunisation and community-level care,โ€ she said.

Nutrition is increasingly being recognised as a critical component of Ghanaโ€™s development planning, with discussions focusing on how stronger coordination, financing and evidence can improve nutrition outcomes across the country. Dr Amoah explained that Ghanaโ€™s approach brings together sectors including health, agriculture, education, water, sanitation and hygiene, social protection, local economic development and public finance.

She said the Food Systems and Nutrition Security Cross-Sectoral Planning Group provides an avenue for these actors to work around a common agenda and strengthen the integration of nutrition priorities into sector and district development plans..Read more: https://www.ndpc.gov.gh/media_center/blog_details/ndpc-director-general-highlights-nutrition-and-sustainable-financing-at-micronutrient-forum
