One common myth that has run over decades is that, living close to a telecom cell site or being exposed to it for a long time causes cancer. The simple truth is that telecom towers use non-ionizing radiation, which is very different from harmful radiation like X-rays or nuclear radiation. Non-ionizing radio waves do not have enough energy to damage human DNA or cause cancer.
In line with this, organizations such as the World Health Organization and the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection have stated emphatically that telecom towers operating within safety limits are not proven to cause cancer. Telecom operators are also required to follow strict international safety standards before sites are approved and activated.
In simple terms:
A telecom tower sends out radio signals to help your phone communicate — similar to radio and TV signals people have lived around safely for decades. The real purpose of cell sites is to improve communication, internet access, emergency response, and connectivity — not to harm people.

Ever wondered how your phone gets signal bars even when you’re far from the city? Well, this comprehensive diagram shows a telecom tower (mast)— basically the reason you can call, text, and scroll online, wherever you are.
Think of the mast as a giant messenger between your phone and the rest of the world. Here’s how it works in real life, quite literally:
1. The parts you see up high

• GSM/LTE Sector Antennas: These are the flat panels at the top. They send and receive calls, texts, and mobile data directly to your phone. Each one covers a “slice” of the area around the tower.
• Microwave Antenna (Drum): That round dish connects this tower to other towers, like a relay runner passing data across long distances.
• Aviation Obstruction Light + Lightning Arrestor: The red light keeps planes safe at night, and the arrestor protects the tower when lightning strikes.
2. The brains at the bottom

• Telecom Equipment Shelter: This small building houses the “brain” of the tower. The Baseband Unit processes all the voice and data, while the Power Plant converts electricity so everything runs.
• Power backups: Towers can’t afford to sleep. That’s why you see solar panels, a diesel-operated generator, and a battery bank. If the main power goes out, these keep your calls going.
3. How your message travels

When you send a WhatsApp message, your phone talks to the antennas up top. The equipment below processes it, then the microwave dish or Optical Fiber Cable shoots it to another tower or data center nearby. Seconds later, your friend gets it.
So every bar of signal on your phone is made possible due to sites like this, working 24/7 — power, protection, and processing all in one spot.
