MacConkey Agar Made Simple 🧫
MacConkey agar is a selective and differential culture medium used to isolate Gram-negative bacteria and distinguish lactose fermenters from non-fermenters.
🩷 Lactose fermenters (e.g., Escherichia coli, Klebsiella oxytoca, Enterobacter cloacae) produce pink colonies due to acid production.
🤍 Non-lactose fermenters (e.g., Salmonella spp., Proteus mirabilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Morganella morganii, Aeromonas hydrophila) produce colorless or pale colonies.
Understanding colony color on MacConkey agar is a key step in the laboratory identification of clinically important Gram-negative bacteria.
