The University for Development Studies, Tamale was established in 1992 as a multi-campus institution

UDS was established in May 1992 by PNDC Law 279, with the mandate to work towards the total development of the northern regions in particular and Ghana as a whole. It recruited its first batch of thirty nine students into the Faculty of Agriculture in September 1993. Established in May 1992 by the Government of Ghana to “blend the academic world with that of the community in order to provide constructive interaction between the two for the total development of Northern Ghana, in particular, and the country as a whole” (PNDC Law 279, Section 279).

“The UDS was borne out of the new thinking in higher education which emphasizes the need for universities to play a more active role in addressing problems of the society, particularly in the rural areas” (Effah, 1998). The university by its mandate and constituency has a pro-poor focus. This is reflected in its methodology of teaching, research and outreach services. The specific emphasis on practically-oriented research and field-based training is aimed at contributing towards poverty reduction in order to accelerate national development:

It began academic work in September 1993 with the admission of thirty-nine (39) students into the Faculty of Agriculture, (FOA), Nyankpala. The Faculty of Integrated Development Studies, (FIDS), Faculty of Planning and Land Management (FPLM) and Faculty of Education, Law and Business Studies(FELBS), Wa, School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS), Tamale, Faculty of Renewable Natural Resources (FRNR), Nyankpala, Faculty of Applied Sciences (FAS), Faculty of Mathematical Sciences(FMS), Navrongo and the Graduate School now in Tamale were phased in from 1994 to date.

UDS MAKES STRONG SHOWING IN 2027 TIMES HIGHER EDUCATION WORLD UNIVERSITY RANKINGS - MAINTAINS POSITION AS 4TH BEST UNIVERSITY IN GHANA

The University for Development Studies (UDS) has recorded another important milestone in its pursuit of academic excellence and global visibility, following its placement in the 1601- 1800 band of the 2027 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings.

The result maintains UDS among Ghanaian universities recognised in the global rankings.

While UDS was placed in the 1501+ band in the 2026 rankings, changes to THE’s lower ranking bands for 2027 mean the latest result should not be interpreted as a direct numerical year-on-year comparison.

Rather, it affirms the University’s continued presence and visibility within the global higher education landscape.

The THE World University Rankings assess universities across five broad areas: Teaching, Research Environment, Research Quality, Industry and International Outlook.

UDS recorded encouraging performance particularly in Teaching and International Outlook, reflecting its continued commitment to quality academic delivery and growing engagement with international partners, scholars and institutions.

The ranking also highlights opportunities for further improvement in research productivity and impact, research funding, innovation, industry partnerships and knowledge transfer.

The result as both an encouragement and a call for sustained effort.

The University's continued presence in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings demonstrates the progress UDS is making in strengthening its academic and international profile.

UDS receives this recognition with a sense of responsibility, knowing that rankings are not an end in themselves but one of several indicators that help us assess our progress as a University.
The University would continue to focus on quality teaching, impactful research, stronger international partnerships and deeper engagement with industry and communities.

The achievement is particularly significant within the context of UDS’ distinctive mandate, which integrates teaching and research with practical community engagement, particularly in northern Ghana and beyond.

Management commends the Governing Council, faculty, staff, students, alumni, research collaborators and development partners whose collective efforts continue to enhance the University’s national and international profile.

UDS remains committed to strengthening its research environment, increasing high-quality scholarly output, expanding postgraduate education, attracting competitive research funding and building stronger international and industry partnerships.

The University also congratulates all Ghanaian universities represented in the 2027 rankings and views their participation as an important contribution to the growing international visibility of Ghanaian higher education.

For UDS, the 2027 ranking is both recognition of progress and motivation to do more as the University pursues its vision of becoming a world-class centre of excellence in teaching, research and community engagement.
