Three nuclear reactors went offline this summer. Not from a fault, from heat.
When France logged its hottest day on record this June, with temperatures topping 44°C, the Golfech, Bugey and Chooz plants had to power down. The rivers that cool them had grown too warm to safely take the discharge water back. Germany and the UK, both reliant on French nuclear exports, felt the shortfall too.
This is not a one-off. Heat waves are becoming the grid's hardest stress test, and every layer of the system takes a hit at once:
- Nuclear plants need cool river or sea water and, in a heatwave, that water isn't cool.
- Solar panels lose roughly 0.5% of output for every degree above 25°C.
- Lithium-ion batteries lose storage capacity above 35°C, and the air conditioning needed to protect them eats into output.
- Transmission lines, transformers and underground cables all degrade faster in sustained heat.
Across the Atlantic, the same pressure shows up as economics: PJM, the operator that coordinates the grid across 13 US states and Washington DC, saw its latest capacity auction miss its reliability target for the third year running, with data centres alone adding over $6 billion to the bill.
The common thread: most of today's generation depends on the climate staying mild enough to run. As heat waves get more frequent, that dependency becomes a weakness.
ENG8's EnergiCell® is designed without it. It generates thermal and electrical energy from the hydrogen and oxygen in water, no river cooling, no rare-earth metals, no radioactive material, and no sensitivity to ambient temperature. Built for a projected €500,000 per MW and installed on-site in days, it is now moving into industrial trials: a 100 kW unit is heading to a ceramics line in Aveiro, Portugal, under a signed letter of intent, with a second trial due to begin at Prio's biodiesel refinery, targeting roughly 20% below current gas costs.
Clean, firm power that doesn't need the weather to cooperate. That's what industry, business homes and the grid needs for the summers ahead.

An independent report has just surveyed 30 LENR organisations worldwide. ENG8 is placed at the highest readiness class in the field.
The Global LENR Landscape Report 2026, by physicist Mario Menichella, was not commissioned by us, not written with us, and not paid for by us. It assesses research groups, companies and government programmes across North America, Europe and Asia on a seven-level commercial-readiness scale. ENG8 is the only organisation in the survey placed at level six - demonstration.
Three findings matter for anyone weighing this sector.
Institutional support has changed. Horizon 2020 funded two multi-million-euro consortia. ARPA-E committed USD 10 million. Tokyo's metropolitan government backed a district-heating demonstration in Japan. This is not where the field was five years ago.
The sector is capital-constrained. Roughly USD 43 million has been disclosed across the entire field in six years, about one Series A in an adjacent deep-tech sector. The report's own conclusion is that modest capital set against the scale of the prize produces an asymmetric risk–reward profile.
And the bar has not yet been cleared. The report is direct about this: no organisation, ENG8 included, has yet delivered an independently audited, sustained, megawatt-scale demonstration. Our readiness class rests on validation we have reported, not validation an auditor has signed.
We agree with that bar. We are also closer to it than anyone.
A 100 kW EnergiCell goes into a live ceramics furnace at Primus in Aveiro this quarter, replacing gas. First energy sales follow in Q4. We won Prio's 2026 JumpStart and a repower of their 8 MW boiler is scoped. Portugal's ceramics association, representing 1,281 firms, backs the trial.
We are raising €1m now to finish the industrial trials and start selling energy.

ENG8 has won Prio's JumpStart 2026 accelerator in Aveiro.
Ten companies competed for a place on the 10-week programme, most of them established scale-ups with proven technologies. Winning it, as an earlier-stage company among that group, tells us something about how our technology is being received.
The award includes a funded industrial pilot with Prio, the well-known Portuguese energy company. That is the outcome that matters. It puts EnergiCell®, our industrial heat technology, onto the site of a listed energy company, in a real production setting, which is precisely where it has to prove itself. Getting there usually takes an early-stage business years and a great deal of persuasion. This puts us on the floor of a serious industrial operator now.
Our thanks to Prio and to the programme's partners: Portugal Ventures, Microsoft for Startups, Fórum Oceano, Inova-Ria and InnoEnergy, co-organised with imatch, alongside the municipalities of Aveiro and Ílhavo.
The trial is where the real proof begins. More soon.

Earlier this month ENG8 was invited by Prio, a leading Portuguese energy company, to present at Global Oeiras Ocean Days, a two-day Portuguese blue economy conference near Lisbon, organised by Hub Azul, the government-funded network set up to grow the country's maritime economy.
We presented our 'Repower the Blue Economy' solutions, built around a problem the sector is wrestling with: how to find clean, affordable power that meets tightening EU and IMO emissions rules. For many operators, the cost of compliance is becoming a real threat to viability, and few low-emission options are available at the scale and reliability that ships and ports need.
The EnergiCell® offers three routes to address it: onboard generation for a vessel's primary and auxiliary power, shore-side power so ships can shut down their engines while berthed in port, and clean power for the ports themselves. Each draws on the same principle, firm power generated on-site without the emissions or the grid constraints that make the alternatives so difficult.
The response was encouraging. Hub Azul will be looking actively at how to bring ENG8's solutions into this vital part of the Portuguese economy.

Two days ago we had on-site meetings with a major Portuguese ceramics factory, to see how the EnergiCell® technology can significantly improve the efficiency and lower the energy cost of their production.
Later that same week, our business development manager, Haslen Back, also visited a leading Portuguese energy company that ENG8 is on a technology accelerator programme with. The company refines biodiesel and holds around a third of the Portuguese EV-charging market. The purpose of the visit was to identify where the EnergiCell® technology could integrate across their operations.
The starting point is heat. As in ceramics, one potential first application replaces the natural gas in an 8 MW boiler in their biodiesel plant with clean process heat from the EnergiCell, removing the methane and the EUA carbon-allowance cost that comes with burning it.
Beyond heat, several other applications are being considered: gensets supplying 24/7 power to fuel stations, static charging for electric vehicles where grid capacity is tight and expensive, on-board EnergiCell power to charge electric trucks on the go, and distribution of EnergiCell gensets to customers across Portugal.
Each of these is still being assessed. What they share is being able to provide power without the need for an electrical grid connection: the EnergiCell generates on-site, around the clock, in modular 100 kW units that can sit behind a forecourt, inside a depot or on board a vehicle.

A ceramics kiln never sleeps. Day and night, it needs heat, and today that heat comes from burning methane.
Last week, our Co-founder and BDO Haslen Back visited a Portuguese ceramics manufacturer to look into how to integrate the EnergiCell® into their furnaces and production line.
This is where the EnergiCell earns its place. A single 100 kW unit delivers 1,000°C+ hot air straight into the furnace, replacing the natural gas burner at the heart of the process. The kilns fire 24/7, demanding megawatts of continuous heat, and the EnergiCell is built to feed that demand without interruption. Take the methane out and the EUA carbon-allowance cost attached to it goes too.
The scale behind this matters. Portuguese ceramics carries over 300 MW of installed heating capacity, much of it concentrated around Aveiro where we are based. Across the country, gas-fired industrial heat runs to roughly 1.7 GW, a market worth circa €2 billion per annum. Because the EnergiCell removes temperature as the constraint, that whole market becomes reachable.
The cost case is just as direct. Gas heat today lands at over €60/MWh of useful heat once you add the carbon allowance and account for efficiency losses. ENG8 targets a generating cost well below that, and we are currently offering industrial clients a 20% reduction in their heating costs.
The EnergiCell does more than supply heat. The site runs solar, but panels only generate whilst the sun is up. When they aren't, the plant still needs firm electricity, and EnergiCell generating systems can supply that requirement at a lower cost than battery storage. The kilns keep firing, day or night.
Applied as a closed circuit, the EnergiCell lifts heating efficiency from around 80% to 95%+. Less energy lost, far more delivered to the work itself.
This work forms part of a STEP innovation funding programme, alongside industrial and technical partners decarbonising some of the hardest processes in manufacturing.
Heavy industry has long been labelled 'hard to abate'. We think the next few years will tell a different story.
