Nestled away in the back of the bustling market of Ermou street, one might stumble across the fragrant shades of Evripidou street. Initially envisioned as one of the main boulevards of the city, it was eventually shrunk into a small side street. It is populated on both sides mainly by spice shops, some of them taking up the same location for nearly a hundred years. Combined with the Municipal market of Varvakeios nearby, the neighborhood has been known affectionately as the stomach of Athens.
The street is currently experiencing a rejuvenation, with the re-opening of two historical hotels and the renewed interest in traditional arts and crafts. Storefronts that have stood dark in recent years are lightning up again, and foot traffic (both local and not) is steadily increasing. Those wishing to nourish the spirit as well as the body also flock to Evripidou street, seeking the public university continually in operation since 1865, offering short courses for free.
