"The West is not a concept that is endlessly exportable."

What do we really mean when we talk about "the West"?

In Delphi Opinions, George Varouxakis, Professor of the History of Political Thought at Queen Mary University of London and author of The West: The History of an Idea, explores how one of the world's most influential political concepts has evolved—and why its meaning is more contested than ever.

Against the backdrop of shifting global alliances, the war in Ukraine, and the rise of alternative political models, he examines whether it still makes sense to speak of "Western values" and what the future holds for the idea of the West in an increasingly multipolar world.

Two roundtables. Two critical questions. One afternoon of dialogue in New York. 🇺🇸

On the occasion of the 81st United Nations General Assembly, the Delphi Economic Forum brought together leading voices from diplomacy, international institutions, academia and business for two high-level Roundtable Discussions addressing some of the defining challenges facing Europe and global leadership today.

“Building Resilience: European Competitiveness and Strategic Autonomy in an Age of Complexity” explored how Europe can strengthen its competitiveness, resilience and strategic autonomy in an increasingly complex global environment.

Later that day, “Disrupting Yourself: Can Incumbents Lead the Transitions They Are Expected to Resist?” shifted the conversation to transformation, asking whether established institutions and businesses can lead the very changes they are often expected to resist.

Together, the two discussions created space for open exchange, diverse perspectives and forward-looking thinking on the choices shaping Europe’s future and a rapidly changing global landscape.

📸 A look back at an afternoon of ideas, perspectives and meaningful dialogue in New York.

Both Roundtable Discussions were organized with the kind support of Philip Morris International.

"We are living through multiple overlapping revolutions."

Historian and bestselling author Peter Frankopan, Professor of Global History at the University of Oxford, argues that understanding today's world requires looking beyond traditional Western narratives.

For Delphi Opinions, he reflects on the return of imperial thinking, the shifting balance of global power, and why the twenty-first century will be shaped by the networks connecting Asia with the rest of the world. As technological, geopolitical, environmental, medical, and demographic transformations unfold simultaneously, he explains why our era is defined not only by uncertainty—but by unprecedented change.

"What happens when AI doesn't just write for us—but reads for us too?"

As artificial intelligence becomes an increasingly common writing companion, Naomi S. Baron, Emeritus Professor of Linguistics at American University, turns the conversation in a different direction.

In Delphi Opinions, she explores how delegating reading to AI may reshape not only the way we process information, but also how we think, learn, and make sense of the world.
