Welcome to the third EU-WASTE project newsletter! 📰🍃

In this summer edition, we focus on the Door-to-Door waste collection system and Study Visit held in July 2026 in Calles, Spain. ♻

Building on the experience of the local council of this municipality, partner in the project, we analyze in detail the implementation of its pioneering Door-to-Door waste collection system, which stands as a model of best practices that can be replicated in rural areas throughout Europe.

🌱 EU-WASTE Project Study Visit & Transnational Project Meeting in Spain

As part of the EU-WASTE Project, we had the pleasure of participating in an inspiring study visit and Transnational Project Meeting (TPM) in Valencia, Spain, hosted by our partners at the Municipality of Calles.

During this valuable exchange, we explored innovative approaches to waste management and circular economy practices, with a special focus on the implementation of the Door-to-Door waste collection system in the municipality of Calles.

🏡 The study visit gave us the opportunity to learn firsthand about the operational aspects of the system, the incentives applied by the municipality, and the first positive results emerging within the local community. Through discussions with our Spanish partners, we explored how this model could be adapted and transferred to other European contexts, including municipalities in Greece.

📌 Alongside the study visit, we also held our Transnational Project Meeting (TPM), where EU-WASTE partners:

- Reviewed the progress and activities of the project
- Exchanged updates and experiences from each partner’s perspective
- Discussed the next steps and upcoming actions
- Strengthened collaboration towards achieving the project’s objectives
- Conducted a SWOT analysis of the project
- Explored connections between municipalities in Spain and Greece, and identified future opportunities for cooperation and new initiatives.

Every piece of waste has its place! As part of our EU-WASTE (Erasmus+ KA210) project, we are raising awareness about the vital importance of managing urban waste and food waste responsibly. 🍏🥦

Segregating your waste at the source is a crucial step towards a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future.

Why does proper separation matter?

- Reduces landfill overflow by keeping organic and recyclable items out of dumps.

🌿Just Go Zero: how the Greek island of Tilos became a certified 'Zero Waste' City
Tilos is a tiny Greek island, and in 2021 it undertook to become 'zero waste'. And it succeeded: in 2023, it was officially proclaimed a Zero Waste Certified City.
Tilos Island is a leading example of sustainable waste management in Greece and Europe.

The experience of Tilos shows how small communities can achieve big environmental results when citizens, local authorities, and stakeholders work together.Within the EU-WASTE project, such best practices inspire and support other regions in adopting more sustainable and circular solutions.

The staggering contradiction of our food system⚖️

Across Europe, an unsustainable imbalance persists:
🔹Over 58 million tonnes of food are wasted every single year.
🔹 Over 42 million people cannot afford a quality meal every second day.

While surplus harvests and supermarket leftovers end up in landfills, millions face severe food insecurity. Food donation is a highly effective tool for waste management, but scaling it requires navigating crucial regulatory frameworks to ensure consumer safety.

As part of the EU-WASTE project, we highlight the essential compliance standards outlined in Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 regarding food information for consumers:

🔹 Equal Access to Information: End beneficiaries must have access to the same critical food data as paying supermarket customers.
🔹 Prepacked Food Logistics: All mandatory food information must be present directly on the packaging or attached labels. For mass caterers or non-final consumer surplus, details can accompany the food via commercial documents.
🔹 Non-Prepacked Food Flexibility: Redistribution is permitted as long as required safety information—specifically allergen declarations and national rule compliance—is clearly provided.

Bridging the gap between food surplus and food poverty isn't just about logistics; it’s about clear communication, compliance, and dignity.

☕♻️ Closing the loop, one breakfast at a time!

Last March 28th, Calles hosted a street discussion forum to raise awareness about food waste. We guided neighbors through the entire circular path of organic matter:

- We set up an info point with merch and waste collection tips.
- We gave them local seasonal fruit.
- And horchata and fartons (traditional valencian sweets).
- Participants disposed of their breakfast scraps in the organic bins.
- We handed out compost bags, showing how today’s waste becomes tomorrow’s soil.
- Seeing the process from start to finish was super clarifying for us to see the whole circle of organic matter!
