we ♥️ boonies Guam is a US territory south of Japan, east of the Philippines and home to stray dogs known as "boonie dogs".
Our small island is currently home to over 60,000 homeless stray dogs. We sadly do not have enough homes on island to foster or adopt these pups, and every day there is a new litter of puppies being found. Our foster programs on island are also at critical levels, and we simply do not have enough humans on island to care for the number of dogs we have. These animals need to find a home off island, but unfortunately it is extremely expensive to fly dogs to the US from Guam. Current estimates for a single adult dog range from $2,000-$4,000+ depending on size and weight...
But that is where the Boonie Flight Project comes in. We have found an inexpensive way to ship puppies to the mainland. All we need is warm, safe, forever homes to receive them. I wanted to catch this mama dog so badly this summer on Saipan. Just before I left.. I got her (with the help of some neighborhood kids!).
She has been staying at Saipan Humane Society to get healthy, and next month she will fly to her new home stateside ❤️✈️
Mama dogs have my HEART. They deserve the world.

Doing social media for Humane Innovations | Animal Services Solutions is pretty awesome because I stumble across videos like this 🤣 Who doesn’t love a good puppy rescue? I love them even more when it’s a Guam puppy, like this little one! 😍🌏
Humane Innovations | Animal Services Solutions came out to Guam and Saipan earlier this year to train shelter staff, animal control, Saipan Humane Society , & the community on animal handling / capture 🥰🐶
Puppies may be small but they can still be chompy, so it’s important to be cautious and use tools when necessary to get them out of tricky situations like this!

PENNY UPDATE 🥰✈️❤️
She is home.
I met this dog in December. I was on winter break from vet school and itching to save a dog.. as usual. I went to the shelter. It’s a sad sad place. Most dogs are terrified or feral. But this one burst from her kennel to greet me and I noticed.. her leg was hanging off. Literally.
Shelter staff hadn’t noticed 😅😭
So I bailed her out. Took her to Saipan Humane Society - the nonprofit clinic I founded. Not a shelter contrary to the name. But we do rehab a handful of dogs each year and she was one of the lucky ones.
A visiting Banfield Foundation vet did her amputation.. and fell in love. This dog had soooo much love to give despite it all.
VCA Charities helped us fly her stateside.. and now she is home 🏠

Heyyy remember that mama dog I pulled off the street this summer? Well. She’s no longer skin & bones.
And.
You all donated enough money to fly her off island. She will be adopted by my cousin’s family and have the BEST LIFE IMAGINABLE! They named her Nala.
Our next opportunity to send dogs is September, so we will ship her out then.
There are MANY THOUSANDS of dogs in need across the Marianas. But when you can help just one very special dog.. it can really fill your heart. AND WE NEED THAT. Because we see so much awful stuff on the islands 😫😭

➡️There’s no way we could save even 1% of the dogs on island. The only way to help them in a big way is to increase access to spay/neuter.

We barely fly dogs now.
Here’s why!
It’s just nooot sustainable. And honestly, it’s not that effective either. Saving 700 dogs is just a tiny tiny fraction of the thousands and thousands of dogs in need across the Marianas.
No, transport orgs won’t help us. It just doesn’t make sense for them. I don’t blame them.
No, you can’t come get one and fly it back. Booo United Airlines .
But still.. I’ll save a dog here and there.

I drove by this mama dog a bunch of times. She was so skinny. I could never grab her. Until I did.
I’m off island, but she’s at my house getting fat and healthy with the two living puppies.
And now she needs a home.
My cousin stateside is actually interested in adopting her 🥹✈️ so.. just need some flight sponsors.
She also needs a name! Mama Dog just isn’t cutting it.
