Part Eleven

Scripture Reading: Genesis 20:2 NKJV
[2] Now Abraham said of Sarah his wife, “She is my sister.” And Abimelech king of Gerar sent and took Sarah.

Lesson Eleven - Abraham lied about his wife

Abraham journeyed to the south and dwelt between Kadesh and Shur. When Abimelech, king of Gerar, inquired about Sarah, Abraham instructed her to tell him that she was his sister. Abimelech then sent for Sarah, but the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said that he was a dead man because he had taken another man's wife.

Abimelech then asked the Lord, “Will You slay the righteous?” for it was both Abraham and Sarah who had deceived him. The Lord instructed Abimelech to restore the man's wife, and Abraham would pray for him so that he would be healed.

It is worth noting that only two chapters earlier, the Lord had told Abraham that, according to the appointed time, Sarah would conceive. Abimelech could have jeopardized God's plan, since Sarah may already have been carrying the promised child. She was ninety years old, yet this king desired her, which suggests that God had restored the youthfulness of both Abraham and Sarah.

Abraham struggled with telling people that Sarah was his wife because he feared they would take her away from him. Had Abraham fully trusted God for his protection and security in this situation, Abimelech would not have taken Sarah.

Believers must realize that some decisions we make can jeopardize what God has planned for us. If we fail to trust God wholeheartedly in every area of our lives, fear will enter those areas where our trust is lacking and cause us to act in ways that work against His plan.

It does not matter how big, strong, influential, or charismatic a person may be; we must always trust God for our security and safety. He will never fail us.

Did you know if we fail to trust God in all areas of our lives, then fear will enter those areas we are lacking and cause us to work in ways that work against God's plan?

Topic: LIFE LESSONS FROM ABRAHAM.
Part Eleven

Scripture Reading: Genesis 18:32-33 NKJV
[32] Then he said, “Let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak but once more: Suppose ten should be found there?” And He said, “I will not destroy it for the sake of ten.” [33] So the Lord went His way as soon as He had finished speaking with Abraham; and Abraham returned to his place.

Lesson - Abraham was an intercessor

Abraham was an intercessor. He interceded for S***m when he learned that the city would be destroyed because its sin was so great. He pleaded with the Lord, asking whether He would destroy the city if fifty righteous people were found there. God said He would not. Abraham continued to ask, lowering the number each time until he reached ten.

Abraham's nephew, Lot, was living in S***m.

The wicked environment of S***m appears to have negatively influenced Lot's family, although Scripture does not state this explicitly. Abraham was deeply concerned about his nephew, and God sent angels to lead Lot and his family to safety outside the city.

That deep family bond never left Abraham. He was always concerned for his nephew and was willing to plead for his safety. Abraham did what was necessary because he desired the well-being of his household.

Believers are called to be intercessors and to pray for their families. We must pray that the Lord will have His way in and through their lives. We should not pray only when things are going badly; we should also bring our families before God when things are going well.

Through prayer and spiritual warfare, we can thwart and dismantle the schemes of the enemy and seek God's perfect plan and will for our families.

Intercessors willingly stand in the gap for others. Let us purpose in our hearts to be faithful intercessors for our families.

Did you know we must pray for our family in the good times and bad times.

Part Ten

Scripture Reading: Genesis 18:14 NKJV
[14] Is anything too hard for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.”

Lesson Ten - Abraham trusted God.

The Angel of the Lord told Abraham that his wife, Sarah, would conceive at the appointed time. Abraham was about one hundred years old, and Sarah was ninety. When Sarah heard this, she laughed within herself because she knew it seemed physically impossible; she was already an elderly woman.

The impossibility of becoming pregnant at her age overshadowed God's limitless power, which is why she laughed.

Abraham, on the other hand, also laughed when God first revealed the promise to him. However, his laughter reflected amazement rather than unbelief. Despite the seemingly impossible circumstances, he chose to trust God.

Holding on to even the smallest strand of hope, Abraham believed God's promise that he would become the father of many nations. He did not allow doubt to overcome his faith but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God and knowing that faithful is He who had promised.

As believers, we must understand that what is impossible for man is possible with God. We must trust God no matter what circumstances we face and never allow ourselves to stagger at His promises through unbelief. Instead, we must be renewed in strength, knowing that God is faithful to His Word.

Even when all the odds are against us, we should not lose faith. Rather, we should judge God faithful, remembering that faithful is He who has promised.

Did you know even if the odds are against us we should never lose faith but rather judge God faithful?

Part Ten

Scripture Reading: Genesis 18:3 NKJV
[3] and said, “My Lord, if I have now found favor in Your sight, do not pass on by Your servant.

Lesson 10 - Abraham was hospitable

Abraham was sitting at the entrance of his tent because of the heat of the day when the Lord appeared to him by the terebinth trees of Mamre. When he lifted his eyes, he saw three men standing nearby. He ran from the tent entrance to greet them and said, “My Lord, if I have found favor in Your sight, do not pass by.”

He asked for water so they could wash their feet and rest under the tree. He also offered them a morsel of bread to refresh them.

Abraham did not merely ask his wife to prepare three measures of fine meal for the guests. He also took a young calf and gave it to a servant to prepare for them. Then he brought butter, milk, and the calf that had been prepared and set the meal before them. While they ate, Abraham stood nearby and attended to them.

Abraham was hospitable as he cared for the three visitors and gave them the best he had to offer. In entertaining strangers, he was entertaining angels.

Believers are also called to be hospitable and kind to others. We do not always understand the circumstances that people are facing, but a little kindness and hospitality can go a long way. When we show kindness and hospitality, we represent the Kingdom of God, and those we serve may be a blessing to us in disguise. Whenever possible, we should strive to be hospitable to those around us.

Did you know when we entertain strangers we may be entertaining angels?

Part Nine

Scripture Reading: Genesis 17:5 NKJV
[5] No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you a father of many nations.

Lesson Nine: God is faithful to His Covenant

When Abram was 99 years old, God told him to walk before Him and be blameless. The Lord spoke to Abram about the covenant and changed his name to Abraham, meaning "father of many nations." God told him that He would make him the father of a great nation and that kings would come from him. The Lord also said that He would establish an everlasting covenant between Himself and Abraham's descendants.

The covenant required Abraham to circumcise every male child by removing the fo****in, which would serve as the sign of the covenant. God also changed Abraham's wife's name to Sarah, promising that He would bless her and that she would become the mother of many nations.

Even though Abraham and Sarah tried to help God fulfill His promise in their own way, God remained faithful to His word. He established His covenant with Abraham, looking beyond his mistakes and sins and upholding His promise.

We, too, will make mistakes in life. We will fall, and we will do things we ought not to do. Yet God remains faithful to His covenant with us. He will not leave us on our own, but He will protect us, forgive us, and establish His promises in our lives.

God is not a man that He should lie, nor a son of man that He should repent. He is faithful to His word. Therefore, let us rest assured and not allow our past mistakes to convince us that God will not accomplish what He has promised in our lives.

Did you know our past mistakes and failures cannot cancel out the promises of God in our lives?

[1] Praise the Lord! Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, Who delights greatly in His commandments.

Topic: LIFE LESSONS FROM ABRAHAM.
Part Eight

Scripture Reading: Genesis 16:4 NKJV
[4] So he went in to Hagar, and she conceived. And when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress became despised in her eyes.

Lesson Eight - Abram tried to help God.

Sarai, the wife of Abram, had no children. Because she was barren, she gave her maidservant, Hagar, to Abram and persuaded him to lie with her so that they might obtain a child through her. Abram listened to his wife, and Hagar conceived. After becoming pregnant, Hagar began to despise her mistress, Sarai.

As tensions grew, Sarai dealt harshly with Hagar, causing her to flee into the wilderness. There, by a spring of water, the Angel of the Lord appeared to her and instructed her to return and submit to her mistress. The Angel also promised that her descendants would become a great multitude.

It is likely that Abram and Sarai became discouraged as they waited for God's promise to be fulfilled. Seeing that they were advancing in age, they chose to rely on their own understanding rather than continue waiting on God's timing. They attempted to accomplish God's promise through human effort by giving Hagar to Abram. However, their decision brought conflict, heartache, and division into their household.

This account teaches believers an important lesson: we must patiently wait for God's promises and trust His timing. When we become impatient and try to make things happen in our own way, we often create problems that lead to even greater difficulties. Abram and Sarai's experience reminds us that God's plans do not need our intervention; they require our faith and obedience.

Therefore, we should not be anxious or rush ahead of God. Instead, we should remain prayerful, trust Him completely, and wait patiently for Him to fulfill His Word. When we rely on God's wisdom and timing, we avoid unnecessary chaos and experience the peace that comes from trusting Him.

Did you know when we are impatient and try to help God fulfill His promises in our life we create some big mess and chaos?

Part Seven

Scripture Reading: Genesis 15:6 NKJV
[6] And he believed in the Lord, and He accounted it to him for righteousness.

Lesson Seven - Abram believed the Lord

Abram was childless, and his servant Eliezer of Damascus was the one who would inherit Abram's wealth. The Lord then came and made a covenant with Abram, assuring him that He was his shield and exceedingly great reward. The Lord told him that Eliezer would not be his heir, but that one coming from his own body would be his heir.

Then He brought Abram outside and told him to look at the stars in the heavens. God said that if he could number the stars, then he could number his descendants.

Abram believed the Lord, and it was accounted to him as righteousness. This is important because it highlights that faith in God is counted as righteousness. What God told Abram did not cause him to doubt, for Abram knew that God would not lie to him. He believed that God would honor His word, and God confirmed His promise through a covenant with Abram.

As believers, we must possess the ability to trust God. It does not matter how things may look. The truth is that we will sometimes be afraid and fearful of certain situations or decisions, but that should not overshadow or prevent us from believing God's promises. Faith is not the absence of fear; it is choosing to trust God despite fear. God is not a liar, and we must believe Him with our whole hearts. Just as Abram's faith was counted as righteousness, God honors those who place their trust in Him.

It does not matter what others may think. One thing we must choose to do is believe God. When circumstances seem impossible and God's promises appear distant, we must remember that God is faithful to His word. What He has promised, He is able to perform.

Did you know that faith is not the absence of fear; it is choosing to trust God despite the fear?

Part Six

Scripture Reading: Genesis 14:22 NKJV
[22] But Abram said to the king of S***m, “I have raised my hand to the Lord, God Most High, the Possessor of heaven and earth,

Lesson Six - Abram was content with the blessings of the Lord.

Abram was content with the blessing of the Lord. He made it clear to the king of S***m that he wanted nothing from him except the food that had already been eaten. He emphasized this when he told the king that he had made an oath to the Lord that he would take nothing from him, lest the king of S***m go about saying that he was the one who made Abram rich.

Abram wanted all the glory to go to the Lord and refused to take any of the spoils of war at the risk of people saying that they were the reason for his wealth.

Abram told the king of S***m that his allies should receive their fair share of the spoils. This shows that Abram was only concerned with receiving blessings from the Lord and did not want anyone to feel as though they were the reason he was blessed. He refused all the spoils and was content with what God had already given him, for he knew that everything belongs to the Lord.

As believers, we must be content with the blessings of God in our lives. Contentment is not complacency; rather, we must be appreciative and be good stewards of what God has entrusted to us. We must not pursue get-rich-quick schemes or deceive, manipulate, and exploit people in order to become wealthy.

When blessings come from the Lord, they bring peace of mind. However, when wealth is gained through dishonest means, we are always looking over our shoulders because we fear that someone will expose us or seek to take from us what we have gained.

Did you know when our blessings come from the Lord we have peace but when it comes from dishonest means we will always be looking over our shoulder?

Topic: LIFE LESSONS FROM ABRAHAM.
Part Five

Scripture Reading: Genesis 14:20 NKJV
[20] And blessed be God Most High, Who has delivered your enemies into your hand.” And he gave him a tithe of all.

Lesson Five - Abram was the one who blessed Melchizedek.

After the victory, Abram was greeted by Melchizedek, the king of Salem. He gave Abram bread and wine. Melchizedek was a priest of God Most High, and he blessed Abram. Abram then chose to give Melchizedek a tenth of all that he possessed. An important point to note is that Abram himself decided what to give and how much to give. At no time does Scripture record Melchizedek telling Abram what he must give.

This brings out a very important principle: giving is not about being told how much to give, but rather about giving from the generosity of your own heart. This was clearly demonstrated by Abram in his gift to Melchizedek. Abram's decision to give a tenth of all he had was voluntary. Scripture does not record God commanding Abram to do so, nor does it show Melchizedek requesting it. Instead, Abram freely chose to honor God through his giving.

As believers, we must decide how much we want to give and to whom we are giving. Giving is not something that should be forced or coerced; it should flow from our love for God and our generosity. No one should have to tell you how much to give. Instead, you should prayerfully decide for yourself what you will give to the glory of God. The motivation behind giving is not to receive something in return, but to express gratitude for the blessings God has already bestowed upon your life.

Giving, therefore, is an act of worship, gratitude, and love. Like Abram, we should give willingly and joyfully, recognizing God's goodness and faithfulness in our lives.

Did you know giving should not be coerced; it should flow from the love for God and our generosity?

Topic: LIFE LESSONS FROM ABRAHAM.
Part Four

Scripture Reading: Genesis 14:14 NKJV
[14] Now when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he armed his three hundred and eighteen trained servants who were born in his own house, and went in pursuit as far as Dan.

Lesson Four - Abram was willing to fight for his nephew.

The kings of Shinar, Ellasar, Elam, and Tidal, king of nations, went to war against the kings of S***m, Gomorrah, Admah, Zeboiim, and Bela. They battled in the Valley of Siddim. After the kings of S***m and Gomorrah were defeated, they fled, and the four kings who fought against them took all their provisions and captured Lot, Abram's nephew.

One who had escaped came and told Abram what had happened. When Abram heard that Lot had been captured, he armed 318 trained men born in his own household and pursued the enemy as far as Dan. He divided his men by night and attacked them, defeating them and rescuing Lot. He continued the pursuit as far as Hobah, which is north of Damascus. Abram did not hesitate when he heard that his nephew had been captured. He did everything within his power to rescue him.

As believers, we must be quick to respond when our brethren face trouble. If it is within our power to help them, we should do all that we can. Just as Abram carefully planned and acted decisively to rescue Lot, we too should be willing to help our brethren and wisely consider how we can assist them in overcoming their difficulties. Whether through prayer, encouragement, counsel, or practical support, we should seek to bring comfort and relief so that they may find peace of mind and rest.

When our brethren are burdened, their struggles should matter to us. Love compels us to act, and whenever God gives us the opportunity to help, we should do so with compassion, wisdom, and diligence.
