𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗬𝗼𝗿𝗸, 𝗨𝗦𝗔

The Forest & Climate Leaders’ Partnership (FCLP), launched at COP27 in 2022, now brings together more than 40 countries committed to protecting biodiversity, tackling climate change and reversing forest loss by 2030.

The partnership is co-chaired by Guyana’s Minister of Natural Resources, Hon. Vickram Bharrat, and the United Kingdom’s Minister for Climate, Hon. Katie White.

The Ministerial Steering Committee meeting brought together ministers, ambassadors and advisers from member countries including Peru, Costa Rica, Colombia, Ghana, Germany, Norway and France.

Meet this cutie! Smaller than your average house cat, and officially recognised as a distinct species!

This is the tilcayo, a tiny, spotted wild cat weighing just 1.4 kg and living in Bolivia’s lush Yungas forests.

Local communities call it the 'tilcayo'. Now, new genetic research has formally recognised it as a distinct species, Leopardus tilcayo, keeping its local name.

The research confirms that South America’s tiger cats actually comprise FIVE distinct species!

So, why is this a big deal?

Because you can't protect what you don't fully understand. Species that look almost identical can have different habitats, threats and conservation needs.

For the tilcayo, there's still much to learn, including its full geographic range. But one thing is clear, its Yungas forest home is under pressure from deforestation, agricultural expansion, fires and mining.

Protecting native forests, restoring damaged habitats and keeping ecosystems connected are essential to giving this little wild cat a future.

The tilcayo may be tiny, but its story is a BIG reminder that biodiversity and conservation go hand in hand.

Practised for generations, particularly during the dry season when rivers and creeks are lower, haiari involves beating the plant at the water’s edge to release its natural properties, stunning fish so they can be gathered.
