Czerny Op. 139 No. 23
is a poem for the fingertips to dance lightly upon the keys. Its melody glistens like morning dew, its rhythm flutters with the liveliness of spring swallows.
Each note resembles a pearl kissed by sunlight, leaping and shimmering across the black and white keys, radiating youthful energy and carefree vitality. The scales flow as smoothly as silk, while the broken chords ripple outward like waves upon a lake, layer upon layer, delicate and elegant.
To play this piece is to stroll through a spring garden: a gentle breeze brushes the face, floral scents fill the air, and the heart soars with the melody, letting the fingers sing freely, weaving infinite vitality and the pure charm of music.

This piece, Milonga picaresque, is a short masterpiece by Piazzolla written for clarinet and piano, included in the ABRSM Grade 6 exam repertoire under List C3. The term “picaresque” originates from the Spanish literary tradition of the “picaresque novel,” suggesting a narrative filled with adventure, wit, and twists of fate unfolding on the street.
The music begins with a low, slightly melancholic melody, as if the protagonist is walking alone through the alleyways of Buenos Aires at dusk, light-footed yet burdened by thought. As the rhythm gradually tightens, syncopations and sudden accents mirror an accelerating heartbeat, symbolizing inner conflict or external pursuit. The middle section features improvisatory ornaments and rubato, resembling an unexpected dialogue or duel, brimming with dramatic tension.
The ending returns to tranquility, but not to full resolution; instead, it leaves a lingering sense of suspense, inviting the listener to imagine whether the protagonist ultimately escapes, triumphs, or continues wandering. Piazzolla skillfully blends tango rhythms with classical structures, demanding that the performer not only master technique but also use tone colour and breath to paint the character’s emotional journey, making every phrase advance the story.
This piece is ideal for demonstrating a candidate’s depth in musical narrative, emotional layering, and stylistic interpretation, going beyond mere technical display to reach the listener’s heart.

Czerny Op. 139 No. 22 is a light and flowing étude, with a melody as gentle as a breeze and a buoyant rhythm that retains elegance throughout.
Its standout feature lies in the use of hand-crossing technique—the right hand must nimbly cross over the left to play a singing melody in the upper register, training lateral arm mobility and spatial awareness.
Even more ingeniously, the piece is woven through with the polyrhythmic challenge of “three against two”: the left hand’s continuous triplet accompaniment moves in counterpoint against the right hand’s duplet melody, demanding high independence between the hands as each maintains its own steady pulse.
In performance, precise timing of the hand crossings is essential to avoid collisions or breaks, while the interplay between triplets and duplets must remain clearly articulated, revealing a richly layered musical texture.
This work is an excellent study for developing hand coordination, rhythmic control, and spatial precision.

Czerny Op. 139 No. 21 is like a lively dance for the fingers! With its buoyant rhythm and skipping melody, this étude bursts with energy and vitality.
Designed to develop finger agility, it particularly strengthens independence and rapid passagework across all five fingers.
Keep the fingertips firm like little hammers while maintaining a stable wrist, ensuring every note sounds clear and even.
With consistent practice, you‘ll notice your fingers becoming more responsive, with marked improvements in speed and control—making this an excellent choice for building solid foundational technique.

RIP Glen…
For you, Glen.
For the love that could not stay.
And for the music that will never truly fade.
