On this day 4 years ago I released CANTICUM MEGAPTERAE II - The Evolution, which dived into my research on the evolution of whale songs and drew parallels with the evolution of human music 🎶🐳🎶

‘The whale recording I analysed in the beginning of my bioacoustics research on whale song culture became the core of my first-ever track: Theme 7 from Canticum Megapterae – Song of the Humpback Whale. Through the mastery of some of my favourite sonic wizards Theme 7 evolved into surreal magical remixes. Some kept more of the original track, while others used only small parts of it. Maybe it works the same way with the whales who copy and remix each other’s songs…’

Devastated is an understatement 😔

I was supposed to be in Tonga for the next 3 months working as a whale guide taking people swimming with these incredible beings, but instead I'm flying back home.

Last week while pulling an anchor on one of the whale swim boats I fell down and broke my wrist. It took some days to get an x-ray and see a doctor who put me in this ridiculous cast. Not the best healthcare on these islands but they did their best.

Now onto what is probably going to be the most difficult trip ever...

Oh and just in case you haven’t seen a Whale breach, here is one I captured during my first expedition in Tonga 🐳

A week ago I could have died out there in the middle of the ocean. But something, call it inner guidance or just plain madness, told me to try again.
Many would think I am crazy pursuing this obsession at the end of the world. Going out at sea searching for singing whales in hopes of recording the perfect song.

Last year, thanks to some wonderful souls who backed my crowdfunding campaign, I spent a month in Tonga going out every day, often in challenging sea conditions, and trying to record singing whales. I managed to get a few recordings, but not as long as I was hoping for. This is the reality of fieldwork - you can go out for weeks and get very few, if any, good recordings.

This year I wanted to try again, also to see if the whales changed their song since last year, but I had very limited budget... I restarted my crowdfunding campaign in hopes of raising funds to go out again recording whales for a few weeks, but I got just about enough to go out for a couple of days. Against all odds I decided to show up and give it all I got.

Sharing bed with ants and cockroaches and eating sh*tty food (those who know me know how important healthy eating is to me!) got me feeling pretty miserable, and then after our boat almost crashed the first day out at sea, I found myself seriously questioning my life choices. I could have died out there, maybe that was my sign from the Universe to go back.

From the very start, Whale Song Revolution has been ridiculously challenging, to say the least, and I was ready to finally give up on this mission. Still, some inner madness told me to give it another shot.

And the Whales responded. Went out at sea again and as soon as I dropped my hydrophone I heard the most beautiful song! I recorded for more than an hour with the singer often being so close we could hear him through the hull of our boat!!!

Ahhhhh life you crazy thing! Thank you Universe, thank you Whales, thank you everyone who supported this crazy dream!!!

Not much has changed since last year, except that Leki's hair got longer & Vili the captain can now drive with only one foot 😅

Went out to sea the other day to test the gear and almost crashed 😬 long story short we got out of it alive 🙏

I had some issues with my recording setup but should be all fixed now! I'll write about the reality of fieldwork some other time, actually I could write a whole book about it, but for now I just wanted to say that I made it to Vava'u and I'm ready to rock! 🤘

Currently raising funds to go out next week and try get new whale song recordings 🐳

After last year's expedition to Tonga I got offered to come back and work as a whale guide!

Turns out I have a couple of free weeks in Tonga before I start working, so I was thinking to try get some new whale song recordings and see if they changed their song since last year! It would be spectacular if I was to document the whale song revolution in action!!! 🤯
