Haiti is hurting. And we don't want to look away.

Many of you have probably seen the news coming out of Kenscoff, a community in the hills above Port-au-Prince.

On August 23, armed gangs attacked the community, killing at least 47 people and kidnapping more than 50 others. Homes were burned, families were forced to flee, and more than 2,600 people were displaced.

These aren't just numbers.

They are mothers and fathers. Children. Brothers and sisters. Neighbors. People with families, dreams, work, homes, and lives they were trying to live.

And Kenscoff is not an isolated story. Violence in Haiti continues to spread beyond the capital into communities that once felt safer. Kidnappings, killings, displacement, and fear are affecting people across the country.

So today, we pray.

We pray for those who were killed and for the families who are grieving.

We pray for those who were kidnapped and for their families who are waiting and hoping for their safe return.

We pray for those who have been forced from their homes.

We pray for the people of Kenscoff and communities throughout Haiti who are living with fear and uncertainty.

And we pray for those who are working for peace, safety, justice, and a better future for Haiti.

But we also want to remember something important: Haiti is more than the violence we see in the news.

Children are still learning.
Teachers are still showing up.
Parents are still loving their children.
People are still working, creating, serving, worshiping, helping their neighbors, and building something better.

At the Apparent Project, we see that every day.

There is still goodness in Haiti.
There is still courage.
There is still faith.
There is still hope.

We will not look away from the suffering. And we will not lose sight of the people and the hope that remain.

At The Apparent Project, we want our children to have teachers who are equipped not only to teach, but to understand children and help them grow.

Recently our teaching staff spent time learning about child development and Discipline that Connects in the Classroom.

They learned about how children grow and learn at different ages, how behavior communicates a need, and how teachers can respond to challenging behavior in ways that teach rather than simply punish.

Together, they are learning practical ways to help children feel SAFE, LOVED, CALLED & CAPABLE, and RESPONSIBLE.

This kind of training matters.

When teachers understand child development and have practical tools for responding to challenging moments, they are better equipped to create classrooms where children can learn, grow, make mistakes, try again, and know they are valued.

We are grateful for our dedicated teachers and for the opportunity to invest in them. When we invest in our teachers, we are investing in the children they teach.

Last year, we asked you to help provide the things our children need. This year, we’re asking you to help support the people who care for them.

Last year, we asked for school supplies- chairs, desks, books, toys, and other things our children need to learn and grow.

This year, our greatest need is supporting the people.

Behind every classroom are teachers who show up each day to care for, teach, encourage, and nurture our children. And behind our school are guards, maintenance and housekeeping staff, and others who help keep AP running.

Thirty people make up the AP Haiti staff. We want to help provide the stability they need to continue serving our children while also providing for their own families.

A group of friends, a church small group, family members, coworkers, or an organization could come together to make a meaningful difference:

Teaching with Heart

Our 5th & 6th grade students are blessed to have two teachers who bring both skill and heart to their classroom.

✨ Peterson, the lead teacher, has been part of The Apparent Project since September 2021. He is married and is also an AP parent. His 5-year-old son, Joshua, is starting 1st grade in September, and Peterson and his wife welcomed a new baby in April.

Peterson says he wanted to work at AP because he believes in providing quality education to children who might not otherwise have access to it. What he loves most about working here is the sense of family. It feels less like a workplace and more like being part of a family.

✨ Fabi, the assistant teacher, loves her job and the children she teaches. She especially enjoys learning different teaching methods, putting them into practice, making plans, and seeing the results in her students.

Although she once imagined herself working in accounting or becoming a florist, Fabi has discovered something unexpected: teaching is her passion. As she puts it, “It’s in her blood.”

We're grateful for teachers like Peterson and Fabi who bring knowledge, creativity, and genuine care to the classroom and invest in the lives of Haiti's children.

💙Energy, Effort & Growth

Our 5th & 6th grade classroom at The Apparent Project is full of energy, conversation, and students who are eager to learn.

Their teacher says that while these students can be talkative and full of energy, they are also incredibly hardworking. They participate actively in their lessons and put real effort into their work each day.

One of the most rewarding parts of teaching them is watching their growth. As they continue to learn and develop, their determination and hard work are becoming more and more evident.

For their teacher, seeing that progress brings both pride and encouragement. Each new skill, challenge, and accomplishment is another reminder of what these students are capable of.

We're grateful for the teachers who challenge and encourage these students as they continue growing in knowledge, confidence, and responsibility.

📚 A New School Year. A New Beginning. 💙

As families prepare for and start a new school year, we’re especially grateful that Haiti is planning to begin school at its usual time this year- the first Monday in September.

After several years of delayed school openings, we’re looking forward to seeing the classrooms at The Apparent Project filled again with children's voices, learning, laughter, and friendship.

But today, we want to pray for all of our families, both the families connected to The Apparent Project in Haiti and the families who support and follow us from around the world.

🙏 A prayer for the new school year:

Lord, thank You for each child and family preparing for a new school year.

Go before the children of The Apparent Project, their families, and their teachers. Protect them, provide what they need, and give them peace as they begin another year of learning.

And we pray for the families in our community who are starting a new school year too. Give parents wisdom and patience. Give children courage, confidence, and a love for learning. Guide their teachers and surround every family with people who will encourage and support them.

Whatever this school year brings, help us remember that You are already there. You go before us, You are with us, and You will never leave us.

Amen.

Meet Our 4th Grade Teacher

Meet Bonhomme Wberdy Lovely, our 4th grade teacher at The Apparent Project.

This is Wberdy's first year teaching at The Apparent Project, and he has already become an important part of our school community.

Wberdy lives a little ways from the Apparent Projeect with his parents. Each day, he makes the trip to school by moto taxi so he can be there for his students.

He comes from a family of three children. He has an older sister who is married and a younger brother who now lives in the United States.

We're thankful that Wberdy chose to bring his gifts and skills to The Apparent Project this year. As a teacher, he has the opportunity to encourage, challenge, and invest in the next generation of Haitian students.

We’re grateful to have him as part of the AP family!

💙Energetic, Hardworking, Growing

Our 4th grade classroom at The Apparent Project is full of energy, conversation, and enthusiastic learners!

Our teacher says that while his students can definitely be talkative and full of energy, they are also incredibly hardworking. They actively participate in class and put real effort into their learning each day.

What is especially meaningful is watching their growth. As they learn and develop, their teacher sees their determination and hard work paying off and he says he is both proud and encouraged by the progress he sees in them.
