The two-disc album features settings for voice and piano trio of poetry and text by writers including Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Christian Haller, Prolitheus Pfenninger and Fortmann himself as well as Fortmann's groundbreaking “Hommage to Schubert's Winterreise”. The “Homage” is his new arrangement of this iconic song cycle for baritone and string quartet.

Featuring Tino Brütsch, Nuria Richner, Florian Prey, Amar Quartett, Trio Accademia Amiata, Malwina Sosnowski, Domitille Jordan, and Talvi Hunt.

The Sonata for two pianos, arguably Poulenc’s finest keyboard work, is emotionally dark and looks forward to the tenderness and anguish of the Dialogues des Carmelites. Very few works in the piano duo repertoire match this sonata in power and emotional force, where aggressive dissonance is contrasted with passages of achingly beautiful material.

Set Two for Piano is the latest in a series of releases showcasing his ‘non-prescriptive’ method of composition. This unique method features different levels of notation allowing the performer varying degrees of freedom to manipulate choices around a set core. The composer states that his hope is “to reward any pianist with even modest ability with immediate success” (Pieces for Pianists Vol 1 & 2) in creating something beautiful and expressive while also providing a challenge to more accomplished pianists to explore new territory.
