This volume unpacks the sometimes puzzling combinations of type, employment and geography that were the standard way of identifying horses and other equids, and which often trip up historians and general readers alike.

📚 New Publication: "Patrician Women and Times of Crisis in Fourteenth-Century Zadar" by Zrinka Nikolić Jakus

This OA article examines how noblewomen in fourteenth-century Zadar responded to periods of extraordinary instability, including the Venetian siege and occupation of the city, recurrent outbreaks of plague, and the political turmoil that followed the death of King Louis of Hungary. Through the life of the founder of a Benedictine monastery, the study reveals the important social, familial, and communal roles played by elite women during times of crisis.

This contribution was published in "Power and Women in Southeast and Central Europe in the Late Medieval and Early Modern Period (1300–1600)," edited by Melina Rokai.

From antiquity to the modern world, beliefs about blood and demons have shaped cultural understandings of the body, disease, the supernatural, and the boundaries between the human and nonhuman. This conference seeks interdisciplinary perspectives on these enduring ideas and the ways they have been expressed across time and place.
