A 20. században felerősödött az a félelem, hogy az ember maga is képes olyan hatalmat teremteni, amely elpusztíthatja önmagát. Ez a gondolat Karel Čapek 1920-ban megjelent R.U.R. (Rossum’s Universal Robots) című regényében is megjelenik, ahol a fellázadó robotok az emberek ellen fordulnak. Ez a félelem párhuzamba állítható a görög mitológiában Prométheusz tettével, aki ellopta a tüzet az istenektől: a fejlődés és a pusztítás lehetősége egyszerre jelent meg. A fejlődés története egyben azönpusztítás története is. Az emberiség a 20. század során olyan rendszereket, fegyvereket és infrastruktúrákat hozott létre, amelyek már nem csupán környezetünket, hanem saját létünk alapfeltételeit is fenyegetik. A Primer károsodási zóna erre az állapotra reflektál: arra a pontra, ahol a pusztítás elsődleges elszenvedője maga az ember.

A cím a nukleáris és ipari katasztrófák terminológiáját idézi: a „primer károsodásizóna” az a terület, ahol a becsapódás vagy robbanás közvetlen hatása érvényesül. A kiállítás értelmezésében azonban ez a zóna nem földrajzi hely, hanem maga az emberi civilizáció. A technológia által létrehozott rendszerek többé nem külső fenyegetésként jelennek meg — az ember saját maga által előidézett folyamatok első számú
károsultjává válik.

In the 20th century, the fear intensified that humanity itself might become capable of creating a power able to destroy its own existence. This idea appears in R.U.R. (Rossum’s Universal Robots), published by Karel Čapek in 1920, where rebellious robots turn against humankind. This fear can be paralleled with the act of Prometheus in Greek mythology, who stole fire from the gods: the possibilities of progress and destruction emerged simultaneously. The history of progress is also a history of self-destruction. Throughout the 20th century, humanity created systems, weapons, and infrastructures that threaten not only our environment, but also the very conditions of our existence. Primary Damage Zone reflects on this condition: the point at which the primary victim of destruction becomes humanity itself.

The title evokes the terminology of nuclear and industrial catastrophes: the “primary damage zone” is the area directly affected by an impact or explosion. Within the context of the exhibition, however, this zone is not a geographical location, but human civilization itself. The systems created through technology no longer appear as external threats — humanity becomes the primary casualty of the processes it has set in motion.

The exhibition is the result of a decade of KristofLab’s artistic practice, framing the themes he has explored and placing them within a broader context along the axis of past–present–future. The monumental installations, videos, and paintings examine—through the artist’s characteristic provocative and at times shocking approach—those phenomena that currently fill people with collective fear and uncertainty. Anxiety over the mass extinction of humanity and fear of the dark intentions of powers greater than ourselves were historically explained through religion; modern civilization, however, relies on science. But what happens when our trust in science is shaken? Information and explanations once regarded as facts, along with faith in reliable sources and in security—elements that should form a shared foundation—have been destabilized. Fear of war has once again become part of everyday life. The loss of trust generates chaos and fear toward things we do not understand. How can we trust a future shaped by technologies and processes we do not comprehend? Hesitating before our own shadow and the negative experiences of the past, our distrust produces alternative explanations—conspiracy theories and conteos—that render an alarmingly fast-changing world graspable. But where is the boundary between reality and fiction in the age of AI? KristofLab’s exhibition invites us to a collective confrontation before the ground completely falls out from underneath our feet.

The exhibition is the IX. is realized with the support of the district municipality and the Ferencváros Cultural Center and its Institutions.
