🌊 World Oceans Day 2026 | Reimagine

This year’s World Oceans Day theme, “Reimagine,” challenges us to see the ocean not as something distant, but as the very foundation of our lives. The ocean provides the air we breathe, the food we eat, and helps regulate the climate that sustains us all.

Across the Coral Triangle—the global center of marine biodiversity—this call to reimagine is already taking shape through collective action. Governments, partners, communities, scientists, and conservation practitioners are working together to protect and sustainably manage our shared marine resources for future generations.

As part of the celebration of World Ocean Day and Coral Triangle Day, The Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reefs, Fisheries, and Food Security (CTI-CFF) proudly joined hands with Indonesia’s Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF), Konservasi Indonesia, WWF-Indonesia, GIZ, Coral Triangle Center, and many other partners in Bali on 7 June 2026.

The event brought together a diverse audience—from students and local communities to tourists and ocean enthusiasts—to learn, engage, and take action for our ocean. Through interactive workshops, educational exhibition booths, inspiring talk shows, and the vibrant Marine Species Kite Festival, participants explored the importance of marine conservation and the critical role of the Coral Triangle in sustaining life and livelihoods across the region.

These celebrations remind us that ocean conservation is not the responsibility of a few—it is a shared commitment that connects us all. Across the Coral Triangle and around the world, countless efforts are helping build a future where healthy oceans support thriving communities, sustainable fisheries, food security, and resilient ecosystems.

Together, let us continue to reimagine our relationship with the ocean—and turn that vision into action.

Nature is one of our strongest allies in addressing the climate crisis. Across the Coral Triangle, healthy coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrass ecosystems help protect coastlines, support fisheries, strengthen food security, and enhance the resilience of millions of people who depend on the ocean.

On World Environment Day, the Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reefs, Fisheries and Food Security (CTI-CFF) reaffirms its commitment to advancing climate resilience through regional cooperation and ecosystem-based solutions. Through its Climate Change Adaptation Technical Working Group (CCA TWG), CTI-CFF works with Member Countries and partners to strengthen adaptation efforts and support communities facing the impacts of climate change.

This year, the CTI-CFF CCA TWG is advancing the finalisation of the Regional Climate Change Adaptation Action Plan 2025–2030 and the development of an integrated investment plan to support capacity-building initiatives and priority climate adaptation actions across the region.

Protecting our environment is a shared responsibility. Every action—whether restoring coastal ecosystems, reducing waste, supporting sustainable fisheries, or raising awareness in our communities—contributes to a more resilient future.

Today, we commemorate the International Day for Biological Diversity by recognising the global importance of the Coral Triangle — the epicentre of marine biodiversity on Earth.

Spanning six countries, the Coral Triangle contains:
• 76% of the world’s known coral species
• More than 2,000 species of reef fish
• Six of the world’s seven marine turtle species
• Extensive mangrove forests and seagrass ecosystems that support critical ecological functions and carbon storage

This extraordinary biodiversity sustains fisheries, strengthens food security, supports coastal economies, and enhances climate resilience for millions of people across the region. Yet, these ecosystems continue to face increasing pressures from climate change, habitat degradation, overfishing, and pollution.

Protecting the biodiversity of the Coral Triangle is essential not only for the region, but also for the health of the global ocean. Strengthening conservation efforts, sustainable fisheries management, and ecosystem resilience remains critical to ensuring that these marine resources continue to support both nature and people for generations to come. 🌏🌊

Join the CTI-CFF Regional Secretariat and be part of a dynamic regional partnership dedicated to safeguarding the Coral Triangle’s marine and coastal resources.

We are looking for a passionate and detail-oriented professional to support monitoring, data management, reporting, and knowledge-sharing across the six Coral Triangle countries. This position will be based in Manado, North Sulawesi, Indonesia.

We welcome applicants with experience in monitoring & evaluation, data analysis, knowledge management, and digital documentation who are passionate about marine conservation and regional collaboration.

The CTI-CFF Regional Secretariat was honoured to welcome Ambassadors from CTI-CFF Member Countries and partner countries, alongside representatives from partner organisations, to the CTI-CFF Regional Secretariat Office in Manado on 24 April 2026 for a meaningful diplomatic visit focused on strengthening regional cooperation and exploring new opportunities for collaboration in advancing a sustainable Blue Economy. 🌊

Hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia, the visit featured a productive discussion on strengthening partnerships and accelerating the implementation of the Regional Plan of Action (RPOA) 2.0, while also showcasing Indonesia’s efforts in sustainable fisheries, coral reef conservation, and ecosystem-based coastal management.

We are truly encouraged by the strong spirit of partnership shown throughout this visit and look forward to turning these discussions into concrete collaboration and action. Together, we can accelerate the implementation of the Regional Plan of Action 2.0 and drive meaningful progress in marine conservation, sustainable fisheries, and blue economy development across the Coral Triangle region.
