Fixing a broken appliance is often cheaper than buying a new one. Yet in Indonesia, most broken goods are still replaced, piled up, or thrown away.

In a new article for AVPN, our Senior Analyst Amelinda Kusumaningtyas explores why repair has become the rational choice for Indonesian households amid a weakening rupiah and rising import costs. Drawing on Kopernik’s field research in Bali, she shows that the willingness and skills to repair already exist. What is missing is an ecosystem that makes repair easy, trusted and accessible, which is what community repair hubs like Bengkel Bumi (Bengkel Bumi Bali) aim to test.

Kopernik Annual Report 2025 is out!

From strengthening coastal livelihoods and supporting farmer-focused technologies to advancing gender equality and climate action, 2025 was a year of collaboration, experimentation, and growth.

Throughout the year, we continued to explore what works by bringing together local knowledge, innovative solutions, and partnerships across communities, civil society, academia, and government.

We also took steps toward a new chapter of independence, supporting initiatives through the Next CEO Program as they prepare to sustain and scale their impact beyond Kopernik.

Through it all, we remain committed to finding and advancing solutions that address social and environmental challenges, support underserved communities, and contribute to a more equitable and sustainable future.

Read our Annual Report 2025 to learn more about the work, partnerships, and progress that shaped our year.

Our initiative to support seaweed farmers in Biak, Papua, continues to grow.

We recently completed the construction of solar dryers and “para-para” (raised drying racks) across five islands: Auki, Meos Manggwandi, Nusi, Pai, and Wundi.

In some communities, seaweed is traditionally dried on coconut leaves, a practice that is still commonly used across the islands. With the introduction of solar dryers, we aim to make the drying process faster and more effective, improving upon existing drying practices.

We also completed seaweed cultivation training across the five islands, engaging more than 250 participants.

With the support of Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), this initiative aims to improve income opportunities and livelihood stability for small-scale fishers by developing a community-based seaweed value chain in Papua Province.

Stay tuned for more updates!

The Kopernik team recently gathered for the Q2 review meeting.

Each team shared their achievements, challenges, and learnings so far, giving us a chance to pause, celebrate the progress we’ve made, and look ahead together.

One of our highlights was hearing updates from IKLIM (, .earth) and Loka Inspirasi Mandiri (LIM) (.inspirasi.mandiri), two of Kopernik's projects which will be officially spun-off and become independent this September!

We also hosted Pasar Pernik, a swap-and-sell community market where Kopernik team members could declutter, connect, and practise the circular habits we promote externally.

There are still a few months left in 2026, and we’re grateful for all the collaborations, learnings, and work we’ve accomplished together so far.
