Fingal Rowing Club

Our beautiful regenerated harbour was officially open yesterday by Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne, and the Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Tony Murphy, have opened the multi-million euro redevelopment of Balbriggan’s Quay Street and Harbour.

Harbour Square is the flagship project and largest infrastructural element of the €50-€55 million 2019-2030 Our Balbriggan Rejuvenation Programme, one of the biggest ongoing urban renewal schemes in the country.

Harbour Square is a unique, sustainable, public open space of 19,300 square metres, incorporating a multi-purpose plaza and linear park designed to host markets, events and festivals and help revitalise Ireland’s youngest large town.

It redefines Balbriggan’s beach and coastline, on both sides of its famous viaduct.

Doesn’t it look stunning! Wonderful to see so much investment in our town!

Amazing news!

Another good news story for Balbriggan and one we have been working on for some time with input from Fingal Rowers and 89th Bremore Scouts.

In accordance with section 179 of the Planning and Development Act 2000 (as amended) and Part 8 of the Planning and Development Regulations 2001 (as amended), Fingal County Council hereby gives notice of the proposed development to be carried out at the following site:

'Proposed conservation refurbishment and sustainable re-use of the existing, historic Bath House and Boathouse, and associated slipways, both identified as a Protected Structure Ref. RPS 0018, located at a 0.07 ha site at King Strand, off Bath Road, Tankardstown, Balbriggan, Co. Dublin.'

The plan is on public display from Thursday 17th September until Thursday 15th October.

Earlier in the year, two of our crews took part in the Boyne Boat Race.

This fantastic race runs each year and is hosted by Inver Colpa Rowing Club Drogheda

It's always a joy to see so many different types of boats all rowing in the same race, including One Design Boats, Celtic Long Boats, East Coast Skiffs and Currachs, among others.

On Saturday, 5th September, crews from rowing clubs across the country took to the water for our annual Lambay Challenge 2026.

It was a relentless battle from Rush South Beach, with crews carving their way through the waves, around the wild beauty of Lambay Island, before making the dash back to shore.

We would like to extend our sincerest thanks to every crew and competitor who made the journey to Rush in the early hours to take part. Your commitment, enthusiasm and sportsmanship are what make the Lambay Challenge such a special event, and we are incredibly grateful for your support.

A huge congratulations to St. Michael’s Rowing Club, Dun Laoghaire. Their men’s crew stormed the course to claim the honour of first skiff home and first boat overall, while their ladies’ crew secured third overall and first female skiff home. Second place was taken by Neptune Rowing Clubs mixed crew in our FISA Quad. An outstanding achievement!

We would also like to say a massive thank you to our wonderful sponsors and supporters who helped make the day possible:

Flynn Park, for supplying sandwiches to keep our athletes and their supporters fuelled throughout the day.

Well done to all crews yesterday who took to the water and competed in our Lambay Challenge. Conditions could not have been better, with boats of different classes racing across the open sea from Rush and circumnavigating Lambay Island before a final charge back to Rush South Beach.

A massive well done to our own two crews, our Junior Ladies and Novice Men (Not so novice anymore) who stormed it, dug deep, and left nothing in the boat.

We hope all participants enjoyed the challenge and will soon open early entry for our Lambay Challenge 2027.

Tomorrow is D-Day! The Lambay Challenge!

Tomorrow, crews will take to the water at Rush South Beach and take part in the 'Lambay Challenge', a grueling 19km endurance race out into the open sea, around Lambay Island.

Crews from all around Ireland, in all different classes of boat will race to round the island and back to Rush. We are excited to see east coast skiffs, St. Ayles skiffs, FISA boats, Currachs and many more to our 10 year Anniversary event.

The Lambay Challenge is row that holds significant importance to our club, our club originated in Rush and was our first home before moving to our permeant home in Balbriggan.

Our inaugural Lambay Challenge event took place in 2017, with just eight boats taking part. But by 2019 our race had increases in popularity, seeing thirty boats take to the water. Crews travelled from far and wide, including internationally to take part.
Lambay island, and the Lambay challenge is close to all our hearts in Fingal Rowing Club. Its where are story began and every year it continues to be part of our story.

We would like to wish our Junior Ladies and Novice Mens crew the very best of luck as they take to the water and race to glory in the name of Fingal Rowing Club.
