What connects a bee visiting a flower with the food on our plates?
Pollinators may be small, but their role in our food and ecological systems is enormous. Bees, butterflies, birds, bats, beetles and other species support the reproduction of wild plants and many of the crops people rely on.
Their decline therefore presents more than an environmental challenge. It can affect the availability of diverse, nutrient-rich foods, while ultra-processed foods are occupying an increasingly prominent place in diets around the world.
In the first article in our World Food Day 2026 series, we explore these connections and ask what protecting pollinators can teach us about creating healthier and more resilient food systems.

Food is never just food.
It connects us to questions of climate, biodiversity, livelihoods, inequality and the choices shaping our shared future.
Ahead of World Food Day on 16 October, we’ll be exploring our food systems from different perspectives, and sharing ideas and resources to help bring these conversations into educational settings.
Our World Food Day series is coming soon. Watch this space! 🌱

We read, watch and share information every day. But how often do we stop to ask where it came from, what evidence supports it, or what might be missing?
For International Literacy Day, we’re looking at literacy as more than reading and writing.
We’ve brought together four https://ow.ly/aqj650ZKhgO resources for exploring critical thinking, media literacy, misinformation and how we make sense of the information around us.

Charity can help meet an immediate need. But what happens when we ask why that need exists in the first place?
For the International Day of Charity, we’re looking at the relationship between charity, rights and solidarity, and some of the questions Global Citizenship Education encourages us to ask.
Who has power? Whose voices are heard? What creates inequality? And what needs to change?
Explore some of the objects, resources and debates that have shaped Irish engagement with global solidarity on DevelopmentEducation.ie.

Humanitarian action should include everyone, but whose needs and voices can be overlooked?
Today’s Resource of the Day explores the inclusion of older people in development and humanitarian policy and practice, offering practical guidance around rights, equality and participation.
As we reflect on humanitarian action around World Humanitarian Day, the resource invites us to think critically about who is included when responses to crisis are planned and delivered.

What does solidarity look like in times of crisis?
This World Humanitarian Day, we’re revisiting our conversation with Caoimhe Butterly about humanitarian and human rights work, displacement, dignity and what it takes to sustain long-term engagement with injustice.
The conversation also challenges us to look beyond narratives that reduce people affected by crisis to statistics or passive recipients of aid, and instead recognise their agency, experiences and dignity.
🎧 Listen. Reflect. Question.

Young people aren’t just learning about global challenges, they’re already responding to them.
Ahead of International Youth Day on 12 August, we’re highlighting examples of youth voice, participation and action.
The UN’s Youth Stories showcase young people contributing through activism, storytelling, conservation and community action, while Self Help Africa’s Science for Development supports students to turn ideas into practical responses to challenges around food, health, climate and sustainable development.
For Global Citizenship Education, this raises an important question: are we creating enough space for young people’s ideas, experiences and solutions?
