As we count down to National Public Libraries Open Day, our ambassadors are sharing why they value libraries and are encouraging people to discover the benefits of free library membership.

Today, National Public Libraries Open Day ambassador and No. 1 bestselling author Sheila O'Flanagan shares why libraries remain such special places.

"Libraries are a place where new experiences, new friends and new lives are waiting for you between the pages of a book.

"The ancient Egyptians called them, books, I assume not libraries, ‘medicine for the soul’ and in a world that seems to change with every passing second, there is nothing more healing than walking into a library and being surrounded by the wisdom of the past and the present.

"And it’s all yours, for free, without pop-up ads and algorithms distracting you and vying for your attention.

"In a library, you can lose yourself in a book, and there’s no better place to be lost."

Library enjoyed a wonderful evening of dream catching and shenanigans at this year's celebration with the mischievous BFG (aka Tallest Smallest Theatre). Many thanks to Áras Inis Gluaire, Belmullet for all the extra giant space needed! Anyone who didn't have a chance to collect their certificate and medal can ask for them at the library.
