Homework: sailing through it or a constant battle?
If homework time often ends in arguments, you’re definitely not alone!
Just like GAA training, drama or arts & crafts, homework works best when it has a set time and becomes part of the routine.
Here are a few simple things you can try:
⏰ Let your child choose the time
Sit down together and agree on a time that works. Give them some guidance, but let them have a say. That little bit of autonomy can make a big difference!
📅 Make a weekly homework plan
Take the homework from their journal and create a simple weekly overview. They can choose whether to do homework on the day they get it or prepare for the next day's subjects.
⏳ Make time visible
For younger children, "20 minutes" can feel like a VERY long time! A timer or even an hourglass can help them actually see how long they need to work for.
🔄 Keep it consistent
When homework happens at the same time each day, it gradually becomes a habit — and hopefully, a little less of a battle!
✨ Simple changes can make a big difference.

All school cafeterias should do this!!
“Students who buy lunches may place unwanted and unopened food on this ice tray. If other students are still hungry after they finish their own lunches, they may choose one item from the share bin. This simple process reduces waste and makes tummies full.”

The exams are about to start and you might feel uncertain, stressed, anxious. All these feelings are normal. Today you might feel like you will never be able to do your exams. TRUST yourself, you know much more then you think.
Today is a day to take some time out. If you don't know your exam material by now, there is not a hope you know it by tomorrow. Go for a walk, go to the gym, take a nap or watch a movie. Give your brain a rest and let all the information you have put in settle for a while. When you take your break, you will feel re-energised and ready to revise the little nitty-gritty once more.
When you get your exam papers, you might blank out and think you don't know anything. Take your time to go through your paper, see how many questions there are, how much time you can allocate to each question. Read each question carefully and underline what is important. Make sure you answer the question, it is no use to write half a page of information that won't give you any points.
Are you stuck? Just start scribbling or doodling something on your scrap paper. It will activate your brain and send you in the right direction again.
When you get back from your exam, take a break before you start studying for the next one. Reset your brain and you get more done.
Good luck to everyone!

Mid-Term = Break-time
Finally it is Mid-Term and for a lot of students it means the end of the Mock Exams.
Well done! Be proud of yourself, you did it and now you deserve a break! You have studied hard for the exams and you need to refresh and reset your brain.
Give yourself a couple of days off and allow yourself to just don’t do anything. Once you have given yourself that bit of time off it is time to reflect on your exams. How did it go? What are you proud of, what could you have done differently, where you organised enough? Did you study enough, did you study in the right way? Note everything down that you can think of as these are things you can improve for your final exams.
You have a little less then 4 months before the start of the exams, it might seem like a long time, but it comes around quicker then you think. Use your mid-term to make a plan for the next couple of months. When you plan in 2 or 3 extra (short) revisions a day, you can get a lot of revision done. You will be able to actually retain what you study and you avoid the endless cramming in the last couple of weeks before the exams.
How good would it feel to be in control instead of stressing out over your exams. Be smart and start now. Have a look at our website on how to plan www.movethathomework.ie/planning or email us for more information on [email protected]

Merry Christmas!
The Christmas Holidays have almost started, time for a well deserved break. You have had a long year and especially when you are in your Junior Cert or Leaving Cert year you might be under pressure to study as much as you can during the break. That is where you go wrong, the break is to re-energise and get productive again. It is much more effective to take a couple of proper days off over the Christmas break and do what you want to do. Catch up on sleep, watch a movie, go for walks or a work out, catch up with friends if that is possible. Make sure that your brain is ready to pick up studying again. You will notice that when you are re-energised that it is much easier to get some studying done. Study smart and take your breaks.
Enjoy the Christmas Holidays!

Have you noticed the Christmas lights going up in town? Christmas is only 7 weeks away. That means that the Christmas exams are very close by as well.
Do you want good results this year, then NOW is the time to start revising! When you do a little every day over the next 4 weeks, you will be well prepared and won’t have to stress.
One of the reasons why teenagers leave it so long to start studying is that they don’t have a plan, they don’t know where to start and instead procrastinate. The work accumulates and accumulates and it gets harder and harder to start on the revision.
When you sit down and make a schedule, you will see that you have actually quite some time left after your homework to plan in revision. You spend a bit of time to create an overview of what exactly you need to know for each subject, that done you put it in a revision schedule. When you know what you are going to learn and when, you will be amazed by the work you get done in just a couple of weeks. And the good news is that by spreading out your work, you still have time to do your social and fun stuff!
Be SMART and start now.
