Energy – Dance ’89
September 1989 (Raydon Airfield, Suffolk)
Event Details
Date: 23/24 September 1989 (started late Saturday night / early Sunday morning)
Promoters: Energy (Quentin “Tin Tin” Chambers & Jeremy Taylor), with Karma Productions & FX Functions
Location: Raydon Airfield (near Ipswich, Suffolk) – ended up in an aircraft hangar after multiple venue changes
Attendance: Estimated 15,000+ people
Background
This was a charity event intended to raise funds for the Marchioness disaster fund (the Thames boat tragedy earlier that summer).
It was originally planned for Southwark Park in London, but local council and police pressure forced last-minute cancellations. The organisers scrambled through the night, being moved on from several sites, before finally setting up at Raydon Airfield at dawn. Convoys of ravers followed, causing major traffic chaos.
Line-up (reported)
Paul Oakenfold
Judge Jules
Evil Eddie Richards
Frankie Bones
Fabio
Jumping Jack Frost
Paul Trouble Anderson
Richie Rich
Little Louie Vega
It became one of the more chaotic and legendary Energy parties of the 1989 “Second Summer of Love” due to the constant police pressure and the sheer numbers that still made it to the final site.

The Shamen – “Ebeneezer Goode”
Chart Performance
Reached No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart in September 1992.
Stayed at No. 1 for four weeks.
First entered the chart at No. 6 on 5 September 1992 and climbed to the top two weeks later.
Spent a total of 9 weeks on the UK Top 100.
Key Details
Released: 24 August 1992
Label: One Little Indian
Writers: Colin Angus & Richard West (Mr C)
From the album: Boss Drum (1992)
It was The Shamen’s biggest hit and one of the most controversial UK No. 1s of the 1990s because of its thinly veiled references to ecstasy (“E’s are good, Ebeneezer Goode”). The BBC initially restricted its airplay during a drug-awareness week, which only increased its notoriety and popularity.
