✅ If the government are serious about reducing child poverty to 3% by 2030, they must target one-parent families with necessary supports for success. This includes:

🔵Access to affordable childcare for lone parents

🔵Increasing income disregards for One Parent Family Payment and Jobseekers Transitional Payment

🔵Increasing HAP rates and creating a new payment, so that one-parent families have a minimum level of income left after their housing costs are covered

🔵Funding out-of-court supports for family law, so separating families are helped to reach agreements about parenting, maintenance and separation in a child-centered, timely, non-traumatising way

🔵Funding for our New Futures Employability Programme, so every lone parent in Ireland who needs it can access it

👏Important points raised by on Andrea Gilligan Show today.

❤️For lone parents, there can be many barriers preventing people moving from social protection reliance to employment. Lack of confidence, challenging life circumstances, lack of childcare or negative knock-on impacts of losing critical social protection benefits all prevent lone parents returning or entering employment.

✅️We need actions that address these barriers, not judgemental attitudes from elected representatives. As Louise said, 10 years being reliant on social protection is typically 10 years in poverty. That isn't a choice anybody wants to make, but is often one forced on them by a system which doesn't offer people different choices.

✨️Shout out to our programme in this too which still needs government funding 😀

📢 Excellent article in The Irish Times, featuring our board member Aoife Desmond.

“At 17 per cent of households in Ireland, single-parent families are probably as big as the LGBTQ community – so why is all of their marketing around the heteronormative, together, family unit?” 👏 👏

❗ Recognition and accommodation of one-parent families is critically important, and economically sound, for both families and companies alike.
