SIZE: Estimated 40lb

John takes the Senior title with this cracking shore-caught Tope. After a slow session, a last-cast bait change paid off in spectacular fashion, resulting in a screaming run and a 15-minute battle before this beauty was landed.

The Big Lerf Weekender kicks off at 10:00am this Friday and runs right through until 6:00pm Sunday 27th September!

It’s a FREE global event, open to everyone, wherever you are in the world. Fish wherever you are and join in the fun.

🏆 TO QUALIFY

Your catch photo must clearly include:

• Your catch
• The lure used, clearly visible in the photo
• The correct card showing your name and the event codeword

The codeword will be announced shortly before the event begins, so keep an eye on The Big Lerf Facebook and Instagram pages for updates.

Junior fish of the month entry

NAME: Caelan Kilroy (Age 13)

SPECIES: Perch

SIZE: 36cm

REPORT: Caelan was fishing a local river for some small Perch when, about 10 minutes into the session, he caught one.

Having recently spotted Pike and some much bigger Perch in the area, he used the small Perch as bait. Within around 15 seconds, a much larger Perch appeared from behind the w**d and took the bait.

A short session that turned into one he won’t forget!

NAME: Cormac Dunne

SPECIES: Perch

SIZE: 37cm

REPORT: Cormac was fishing the Royal Canal near Clonard using a small micro jig when, out of nowhere, something smashed the lure.

At first he thought he had hooked a small Jack Pike, but once the fish came into view he realised it was a cracking Perch and knew he didn’t want to lose it!

NAME: Jordan Matthews

SPECIES: Thick-Lipped Grey Mullet

SIZE: 57.5cm / 6lb+

REPORT: We headed out targeting a completely different species, but the fishing gods had other plans and blessed me with my first-ever specimen Thick-Lipped Grey Mullet. What a way to kick things off!

To have my first one turn out to be a specimen like this is absolutely unreal. At 57.5cm and over 6lb, it’s one of those captures that reminds you exactly why we put in the days on the bank.

You genuinely never know what’s going to happen at the other end of the line!

NAME: Keith Quiney (Age 14)

SPECIES: Smoothhound

SIZE: 100cm / 7lb

REPORT: Keith was fishing down at Cahore, hoping to pick up a few flatfish or Bass using a 1/0 flatfish rig.

All of a sudden, his line went completely slack. As he started reeling in the slack, the fish suddenly took off and began peeling drag.
After a cracking fight, Keith managed to land this impressive 100cm Smoothhound weighing 7lb.

NAME: Elle Hargreaves (Age 9)

SPECIES: Pike

SIZE: 14.7lb

REPORT: Elle was out trolling with her family, one of her favourite ways to spend a day, when she hooked into this lovely Pike.

The fish put up such a hard fight that Elle was convinced she had hooked a 20-pounder! After a brilliant battle, she managed to land the fish and was delighted to discover she had caught a new personal best at 14.7lb.

She couldn’t stop shaking and smiling afterwards. A fantastic catch and a PB she’ll remember for a long time!

NAME: Kacper Zarzycki

SPECIES: Conger

SIZE: 167cm / Approx. 30–35lb

REPORT: After two days targeting Rays without any luck, big tides, strong currents and loads of w**d were making the fishing difficult. I eventually got fed up, reeled in the rods and decided to change tactics.

I put on a Conger trace and dropped it just a couple of feet out. About 20 minutes later, the reel suddenly screamed off! My dad and I ran for the rod, I picked it up and a serious battle began.

After a tough fight, I finally managed to land this incredible 167cm Conger, estimated at 30–35lb, smashing my previous PB.

Absolutely over the moon with this fish. Changing tactics certainly paid off!
