Most Irish SMEs asking "where do we start with AI?" are asking the wrong question first.

The CSO says 20.2% of Irish enterprises used AI in 2025, up from 15.2% the year before. But only 17.2% of small businesses did, and just 6.2% of enterprises were using it for workflow automation or decision support.

Most of us are still at the "someone pastes an email into ChatGPT" stage. That's AI, but it isn't automation.

→ Start with a problem, not a tool
→ Pick one workflow that's frequent, measurable and low-risk
→ Automate the smallest useful piece first (enquiry in, details extracted, CRM draft created)
→ Keep a human approving anything that touches money, complaints or hiring
→ Measure hours saved before expanding

Some of the best first candidates are email triage, lead qualification, document processing and reporting. The best one is whichever costs you the most repetitive admin time each week.
