When an autistic person doesn’t answer immediately, don’t assume they didn’t understand or are ignoring you❗️

Some autistic people may need additional time to process information, especially when language is complex or sensory and social demands are high.
Repeating or rephrasing the question too quickly can sometimes add more information to process.

Sometimes, the most helpful thing we can do is ask clearly and give the person time to respond.

A delayed response does not necessarily mean a lack of understanding.

Why can something that happened years ago sometimes feel like it happened yesterday?
Because memory doesn’t measure time like a clock. 🧠

Emotionally intense experiences can be remembered with remarkable vividness. When a smell, place, word, or situation resembles the original experience, memory and emotion networks including the hippocampus and amygdala can reactivate aspects of it.

We may logically know, “That happened years ago,” while the emotional and bodily response still feels surprisingly immediate.

Memory isn’t a video stored in the brain; it is reconstructed and influenced by context each time we remember.

🧠 Time creates distance from an event but time alone doesn’t determine the strength of its emotional trace.

🧠 Can the brain really “get used to” sleeping less?
We may feel more accustomed to functioning on insufficient sleep, but subjective adaptation does not necessarily mean that cognitive performance has fully adapted.

Chronic sleep restriction can affect attention, vigilance, working memory, and aspects of executive functioning, and our perception of how impaired we are may not always match our actual performance.

We may get used to feeling tired more than the brain

🧠 Why do the simplest decisions become harder when we’re tired?

Decision-making isn’t just about “choosing”; it’s a cognitive process that relies on a range of executive functions: attention, working memory, comparing alternatives, inhibiting quick responses, and evaluating consequences.

When we’re tired, these processes become less efficient, particularly those associated with the networks of the prefrontal cortex. As a result, we may find ourselves postponing decisions, hesitating more, or choosing the quickest and least cognitively demanding option.

Fatigue can also affect emotional regulation, causing the feelings of the moment to carry more weight in our decisions.

So, if an important decision feels impossible at the end of a long day, you may not need more thinking, you may simply need better cognitive resources. 🧠

Sometimes, sleeping on a decision isn’t avoiding it; it’s a good cognitive strategy.

A child may appear calm and cooperative at school all day…
then come home and cry, become irritable, or completely fall apart.

This doesn’t necessarily mean they’re “misbehaving” at home.

For some children, particularly some autistic children, the school day can require significant effort to manage sensory input, social interactions, instructions, transitions, and emotional regulation.

Some may cope through masking, while sensory, cognitive, and emotional demands accumulate throughout the day.

Once they reach a place where they feel safer, they may no longer have the capacity to keep compensating.

🧠 Being calm at school doesn’t always mean being comfortable.

Sometimes the better question isn’t:
“Why are they behaving like this at home?”
but “How much effort did it take to look okay all day?”

(Neuroplasticity).

Does the brain stop developing after puberty?

No. But scientifically, it is more accurate to say that the brain continues to change throughout life, rather than developing in exactly the same way as it does during childhood and adolescence.

Some neural circuits continue to mature beyond puberty, and throughout life the brain can modify connections and reorganize aspects of its networks in response to learning, experience, training, and the environment.

This capacity is known as neuroplasticity.
However, neuroplasticity is not unlimited. Its extent varies with age, brain region, type of experience, and individual factors.

🧠 Puberty isn’t where the brain stops changing, it marks a shift in how the brain changes.

Creative? You must be right-brained. 🎨
Logical? You must be left-brained. 🧠
We’ve heard it everywhere, but neuroscience tells a different story.

While some brain functions are more lateralized, there is no evidence that people can be divided into “right-brained” or “left-brained” personalities.

A study of more than 1,000 people by Nielsen et al. (2013) found no evidence that individuals generally rely more on one hemisphere than the other.

Even creativity isn’t located only in the “right brain.” Research suggests that creative thinking involves the interaction of multiple brain networks.

🧠 You’re not half a brain… you’re a whole network.

So, which team are you: Creative 🎨 or Logical 🧩?

Two years old is an exciting period of rapid development in language, communication, and social interaction. 🧠💬

At this age, children typically begin to understand more words and instructions, expand their vocabulary, and combine words to communicate their needs and ideas.

But development is not a race. 🌱 Individual differences are normal, and children do not necessarily reach every milestone at exactly the same time.

What matters is the child’s overall developmental trajectory: Are new skills emerging? Is communication progressing? Is the child increasingly understanding and interacting with others?

💡 If you have concerns about your child’s language or communication development, consult a qualified specialist for an appropriate assessment.

🧠 Sensory processing in autism is not one-size-fits-all.
From a neuropsychological perspective, autistic children do not all process sensory information in the same way.

Some may show hyper-reactivity to sounds, light, or touch, while others may show hypo-reactivity or actively seek certain sensory input.

Sensory differences can also vary across sensory modalities and from one child to another. Understanding the child’s individual sensory profile is therefore more informative than assuming that every autistic child experiences sensory sensitivity in the same way.

🧩 Autism is a spectrum, and sensory experiences are diverse too.

Do autistic people lack empathy?
This is one of the most common myths about autism.

Research suggests that empathy is not a single ability.

Some autistic individuals may find it more difficult to interpret social cues or infer what someone else is thinking, but that does not mean they don’t care or don’t feel for others.

In fact, many autistic people report experiencing others’ emotions very deeply, sometimes even to an overwhelming extent.

The difference is often how empathy is processed or expressed, not whether it exists.

🧠 Understanding the different components of empathy helps us better understand autism.
