Wishing Ger a very happy retirement! 🎉

Last week, the team at Birds Eye Naas came together to celebrate Ger Chaney and wish him all the very best as he begins a well-deserved retirement after more than 30 years with the business.

Ger has been a familiar and much-loved member of the team over the years, making a fantastic contribution to the Birdseye site across a number of roles.

Ger originally joined ESS more than 30 years ago before moving across to Green Isle Foods, as it was known at the time. After a period away, we were delighted to welcome him back to ESS, where he joined the Utilities team.

It was lovely to see colleagues come together to mark the occasion and share some memories from Ger's many years at the site. The ESS team also presented Ger with a card and voucher signed by colleagues, including those who couldn't be there on the day, so everyone could be part of the celebrations.

Ger, thank you for all your hard work, commitment and friendship over the past 30-plus years. You will certainly be missed!

From everyone at ESS and Birds Eye, we wish you a long, happy and well-deserved retirement.

Enjoy the next chapter, Ger. Put the feet up, enjoy some well-earned time off and make the most of it! 🥂

All the very best!

Matching engineering capability to changing demand is difficult.

Too much fixed capacity can create unnecessary long-term overhead. Too little can place additional pressure on internal teams and increase operational risk when workload rises.

Effective outsourcing gives organisations access to flexible engineering support that can adjust around operational requirements. Capacity can increase when demand rises and reduce again when conditions stabilise, while maintaining access to the expertise the site needs.

The goal is not simply more people. It is the right capability at the right time.

Spare parts strategies should evolve with the assets they support.

As equipment, maintenance priorities and stock requirements change, the way critical spares are managed needs to keep pace. A strategy that made sense several years ago may no longer reflect what the operation needs today.

A structured review can help improve visibility, confirm which spares are genuinely critical and identify where inventory no longer aligns with maintenance requirements.

If it has been 3+ years since your last review, it may be time to take another look.

Lean Maintenance is about improving how maintenance work is planned, prioritised and delivered.

By applying lean principles, organisations can reduce waste within maintenance activity while keeping the focus on reliability and operational performance.

That can mean better planning and scheduling, fewer unplanned interruptions, more effective use of maintenance resources and stronger spare-parts control.

The objective is not simply to do more maintenance.

It is to remove unnecessary activity and focus effort where it creates value for the operation.

Repairing equipment is essential. But strong maintenance teams also ask what happens before and after the repair.

- Is the asset still delivering the value expected from it?
- What does its performance history tell us?
- Is maintenance effort being focused in the right areas?
- Could different decisions extend its useful life?
- What risks are starting to develop?

This is where maintenance thinking begins to become asset management thinking.

Instead of focusing only on today's fault, teams consider the complete asset lifecycle and how maintenance, risk, investment and operational decisions influence long-term performance.

That broader perspective helps organisations move away from purely reactive maintenance towards more structured asset performance.
