Mallow Adult Learning Centre

In 1990 International Literacy Year a group of concerned people decided to set up a scheme in Mallow to help adults who had problems with reading, writing and spelling. A number of voluntary tutors were recruited and trhough local radio, newsletters and newspaper advertisements, the public were made aware that help was available in Mallow. THE SERVICE IS FREE AND CONFIDENTIAL. Tuition is on a one-to-one basis, for 1-2 hours/week. Everyday difficulties faced by those with difficulties with reading and writing :

Afraid to use tablets given by the doctor, in case the wrong ones or wrong dosage given to the child. Poor work opportunities. Parenting problems - when you are unable to help child/children with their homework etc. That is just a few examples of how people are affected everyday. Adult learners frequently blame themselves for their problems. However, these problems are often the result of a variety of factors, outside the control of the individual. For example:

***Money was tight so we could not afford the school books.

***I was a clever student but I was worried about what was happening at home, things weren't great there.

***For most of my stay in school the class sizes were too big.

***Because of illness when I was a child I missed several years at school
