They say that if you love your job, you'll never work a day in your life.
That saying certainly rang true today as I got the opportunity to visit beautiful County Wicklow on a fabulous autumn day while carrying out IT site audits for a valued customer across two of their locations.
The purpose of the visits was to assess and document the existing IT infrastructure in preparation for upcoming network and connectivity upgrades. Throughout the day, I:
✅ Identified potential risks and areas requiring attention
✅ Mapped out the current network topology
✅ Reviewed and assessed existing router configurations
✅ Surveyed suitable locations for new communications cabinets
✅ Verified that uplinks could be established to the new fibre services that will replace the existing internet connections
✅ Fully documented each site and captured detailed photographs of the IT infrastructure
✅ Recorded any issues, challenges, and potential pitfalls to ensure a smooth deployment phase
Days like today highlight the importance of thorough planning and site surveys. Taking the time to understand the environment, identify risks early, and document everything correctly helps ensure future projects are delivered efficiently and with minimal disruption.
A productive day, great customer engagement, and some stunning Wicklow scenery along the way.

8 YEARS. STILL GOING. 🍎💻
Some IT jobs are about fixing a problem.
Others are about building a relationship that lasts.
This week, I’m back in the local college working on another iMac deployment and this one means a little more.
For the past 8 years, I’ve been invited in by the local Education & Training Board to support their multimedia labs setting up, configuring, repairing, maintaining and troubleshooting the Macs used by students studying multimedia and creative technologies.
I’ve watched the technology evolve, the labs change and new generations of students come through the doors.
And now I’m back again.
This time, I’m setting up and configuring the latest 24-inch iMacs, Model A3137, getting them ready for the students who will use them to learn, create and develop their skills.
What started as individual jobs over the years has developed into something I value enormously:
Trust.
When a client continues to call you back after 8 years, it says far more than any advertisement ever could.
It’s a reminder that good IT support isn’t just about knowing the technology.
It’s about reliability, experience, relationships and delivering when it matters.
Proud to be back and proud to be part of keeping these labs at the cutting edge for the next generation.

🚀 Small Size. Big Performance. 🚀
Over the years, I've had countless PCs, laptops, and workstations come through my doors, but every now and then a device arrives that genuinely makes you stop and take notice.
This week, it's the Lenovo IdeaCentre Mini Snapdragon with 32GB LPDDR5X RAM, 512GB SSD, and Windows 11 Home.
At first glance, it's hard to believe how much power Lenovo has packed into such a compact little box. It's incredibly neat, tidy, energy-efficient, and whisper quiet, making it perfect for the home office, business workspace, media centre, or everyday computing.
What really impresses me is the value on offer. You get a modern, responsive system that takes up hardly any desk space while delivering a smooth Windows experience for productivity, browsing, streaming, and general day-to-day use.
In a world where bigger often gets all the attention, this little machine proves that great things really do come in small packages.
✅ Compact and stylish
✅ 32GB LPDDR5X memory
✅ Fast 512GB SSD storage
✅ Windows 11 Home
✅ Energy efficient and quiet
✅ Excellent value for money
This particular unit has already found its new owner and has now been fully set up, updated, and prepared for its new home. It's always satisfying handing over a machine that's ready to go straight out of the box, and I have no doubt its new owner is going to be impressed.
I've seen a lot of hardware over the years, but this little Lenovo is one of those devices that just makes sense. Simple, effective, and surprisingly capable.
Wishing the new owner many years of happy computing with this little powerhouse!

⚡💡🔌A good reminder today that a cable tester doesn't always tell the full story.🔌💡⚡
I was recently called in to assist with a newly installed network where a UniFi U7 Long-Range access point was showing as meshing despite being physically connected back to the network through a TP-Link switch.
The installation, including the cabling, had already been completed by an electrician. When the issue couldn't be resolved and the access point continued to operate over a wireless uplink instead of its wired connection, the customer asked me to investigate.
The troubleshooting process quickly ruled out the obvious:
✅ Access point hardware was working
✅ Switch port was working
✅ Known-good patch leads worked correctly
✅ Cable continuity tester passed all 8 conductors
❌ Installed cable run would not establish a reliable Ethernet link
After swapping ports, testing with known-good cables, and connecting a laptop at the access point end, the symptoms pointed towards an intermittent physical layer issue.
The laptop connection repeatedly dropped before eventually stabilising, despite the cable tester reporting a pass.
The root cause?
A poor CAT6 termination at the access point end of the cable run.
After re-terminating the cable, the access point immediately established a proper wired uplink, adopted correctly, and stopped meshing.
The lesson here is simple: a basic continuity tester can confirm that conductors are connected, but it cannot verify that a cable will reliably support Gigabit Ethernet. Intermittent terminations and poor contacts can still pass a continuity test while causing real-world network issues.
This was a great example of why methodical troubleshooting and testing with live network equipment often reveal issues that aren't obvious during installation or basic cable testing.

Your Microsoft 365 phishing protection shouldn’t be your last line of defence.
I received this phishing email recently, pretending to be from a bank.
At first glance, it looks convincing. The branding, language and call to action are all designed to create urgency and encourage the recipient to click.
And that’s exactly why businesses need to think beyond a single layer of email security.
Microsoft 365 already provides built-in protection against phishing and malicious email but defence in depth matters.
As an MSP, I use an additional email security layer that works alongside Microsoft 365, providing another level of protection against phishing, impersonation and other email-based threats.
One of the things I particularly value is that it brings the picture together.
Microsoft's findings plus the additional email security layer's findings = one managed dashboard.
Rather than having security information spread across different places, I can manage and review the tenant from one centralised platform.
And from an MSP perspective, this is just as important as the technology itself.
The client shouldn't have to become an email security administrator.
They don't need to regularly log into the Microsoft 365 security environment to determine:
🔹 Is this email legitimate?
🔹 Is this actually phishing?
🔹 Why was this message quarantined?
🔹 Should this email be released?
🔹 What is happening with suspicious messages?
That's part of what I manage for them.
The tenant is properly configured, monitored and managed as part of the service, giving the client an additional layer of protection without adding another security headache to their workload.
The benefits of this approach include:
✅ Additional phishing and impersonation detection
✅ Another layer of protection alongside Microsoft 365
✅ Combined visibility through a central managed dashboard
✅ Better handling of legitimate emails that have been flagged
✅ Easier investigation of suspicious messages
✅ Reduced administrative burden for the client
✅ MSP-led management of the email security environment
✅ Defence in depth against constantly evolving email threats
Cybercriminals only need one successful phishing email to steal credentials, compromise an account or gain access to sensitive business information.
Adding another layer and having that layer properly managed gives businesses another opportunity to stop that threat before it becomes a problem.
Because ultimately, good cybersecurity isn't just about having more tools.
It's about having the right layers, properly configured, monitored and managed.
And sometimes the best phishing email is the one your user never has to see.

Behind every tidy office setup, there’s a bit of hands-on work! 😄
Not every IT job involves sitting at a desk.
Sometimes, it means getting down to the practical stuff — reconnecting power, running Ethernet cables, tidying up connections and making sure everything is working properly.
A client recently had some computers repositioned around their office, so I was called in to help get everything reconnected and working as it should.
This photo was taken during the process. Clearly, I was having far too much fun! 😂
It’s a good reminder that there’s often a lot of work behind the scenes that people never see.
From office reconfigurations and computer moves to troubleshooting and day-to-day IT support, sometimes you simply need to roll up your sleeves and solve the problem.
And yes, the finished setup looked considerably more professional than this photo! 😉
If your business is planning an office move, changing your workspace or simply needs reliable IT support, feel free to get in touch.

🚀 10x Network Performance Improvement Delivered! 🚀
Recently called out to a customer site where a 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband connection was only achieving 100Mbps throughput across the network.
After carrying out a full network assessment, I confirmed that the infrastructure was equipped with Cat 5e cabling and Gigabit switches, so the hardware was capable of supporting the full fibre speed. The challenge was identifying what was forcing the network to operate at Fast Ethernet (100Mbps) speeds.
Following careful troubleshooting, I located the root cause: a poorly terminated network cable. I replaced the faulty cable with a new Cat 6 cable and re-terminated both ends with new RJ45 connectors.
The result? A speed test confirmed that the network is now operating at its full potential, delivering throughput that matches the fibre connection entering the building.
✅ Network throughput increased by 10x
✅ Faster file transfers and application performance
✅ Quicker software updates and downloads
✅ OneDrive and SharePoint syncing fully operational
✅ Reduced cloud backup times
✅ Improved productivity across the business
Sometimes the biggest performance issues come from the smallest faults. A systematic troubleshooting approach makes all the difference.
