Had an enjoyable visit to Coolattin House to preview the upcoming auction. Some lovely items, and the location is just stunning! Some photos more featuring the location than the antiques.

A beautiful and rare 32 piece set of antique French Christofle silver plated cutlery, all with the anchor stamp for the French Navy. Dating to the first part of the Twentieth century, these were reputedly from one of the French Naval vessels taken by the British Navy at the start of the Second World War before they could fall into German hands. All pieces are stamped Christofle, with French stainless steel blades. Quite apart from the history behind these, it’s a beautiful and useable set of high quality antique cutlery.

An Irish pine creepie stool, dating to the second part of the C.19th, with old dark red paint on the legs and parts of the top. The top is interesting, a piece of tree edge, showing the curve of the trunk on the underside, with portions of the original bark still present. A nice piece of Irish vernacular furniture.

Coming with us to tomorrow is this beautiful original oil on canvas by Thomas Sydney Cooper ( 1803 - 1902 ), who was noted for his paintings of cows and sheep in natural settings, much set around his home in Canterbury. This example is signed and dated 1880, and faintly titled on the reverse “ In the marshes “. The painting features four cows at rest in the early morning light, several birds are distantly flying by, otherwise there is a beautiful stillness and calm to the scene.
