๐ก ICMP Explained | Internet Control Message Protocol ๐
ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol) is a network-layer protocol used to send error messages, diagnostic information, and connectivity status between network devices.
It is commonly used by tools such as Ping and Tracert for network troubleshooting.
๐น What is ICMP Used For?
โ
Test network connectivity
โ
Identify unreachable devices
โ
Report network errors
โ
Troubleshoot routing problems
โ
Check packet loss and connectivity
โ
Help identify network paths
โ
Diagnose network communication issues
๐ Common ICMP Message Types
๐น Echo Request โ Sent when you run Ping
๐น Echo Reply โ Response received from the destination
๐น Destination Unreachable โ Destination or service cannot be reached
๐น Time Exceeded โ TTL expires, commonly used by Tracert
๐ ๏ธ Useful Commands
Test connectivity:
ping 8.8.8.8
Test a hostname:
ping google.com
Trace the network path:
tracert 8.8.8.8
Continuous Ping:
ping 8.8.8.8 -t
Stop Continuous Ping:
Ctrl + C
โ ๏ธ Important Point
ICMP is not TCP or UDP, so it does not use TCP/UDP port numbers.
Also, a failed Ping does not always mean the destination is down. ICMP may be blocked by a firewall or network device.
๐ง Simple Example
Your PC
โ
ICMP Echo Request
โ
Router / Network
โ
Destination
โ
ICMP Echo Reply
โ
Your PC
โญ Remember
ICMP = Error Reporting + Connectivity Testing + Network Diagnostics
Ping โ ICMP Echo Request/Reply
Tracert โ Uses ICMP responses to help identify the network path

๐ How Do AD Security Groups Control File Access with DFS?
A user opens:
\\company.local\Files\Finance
But gets:
โ Access Denied
Hereโs the basic flow:
User
โ
AD Security Group
โ
DFS Namespace
โ
DFS Referral
โ
File Server
โ
Share Permissions
โ
NTFS Permissions
โ
File Access
๐ฅ Example
Ravi โ GG-Finance โ Finance Folder
Instead of assigning permissions directly to Ravi, assign permissions to the security group.
For different access levels:
GG-Finance-Read โ Read
GG-Finance-Modify โ Modify
๐งฉ AGDLP
Accounts โ Global Groups โ Domain Local Groups โ Permissions
Example:
Ravi โ GG-Finance โ DL-Finance-Modify โ Finance Folder
๐ Access Denied? Check:
๐น DFS path
๐น Actual folder target
๐น AD group membership
๐น whoami /groups
๐น Share permissions
๐น NTFS permissions
๐น Permission inheritance
๐น Effective Access
And remember:
DFS gives the path.
AD groups organize access.
Share + NTFS permissions enforce access.

๐ How do users access shared folders through DFS?
Instead of remembering:
\\FS01\Finance
\\FS02\HR
\\FS03\IT
Users can use one logical path:
\\company.local\Files
๐ง DFS Flow
User
โ
DFS Namespace
โ
DFS Referral
โ
Actual Folder Target
โ
Share + NTFS Permissions
โ
Files
๐ง Remember:
DFS Namespace = Logical access path + referrals
DFS Replication = File replication
They are not the same thing.
If DFS isnโt working, check:
๐น DNS
๐น AD connectivity
๐น DFS Namespace
๐น DFS Referral
๐น SMB / Port 445
๐น Share permissions
๐น NTFS permissions
Useful commands:
nslookup company.local
Test-NetConnection FS01 -Port 445
And remember:
DFS gives you the path. Permissions determine what you can access.

GPT vs MBR: Which partition table is right for YOUR drive? ๐พโก One supports 2TB+ drives with unlimited partitions, the other is the old-school standard still used for legacy systems. Swipe to see the difference! ๐
GPT (GUID Partition Table) vs MBR (Master Boot Record) โ the ultimate disk partitioning showdown! If youโre setting up a new SSD, dual-booting Windows and Linux, or just confused about which format to choose, this breakdown is for you. GPT supports drives over 2TB, allows up to 128 partitions, and works with UEFI boot for faster startups. MBR maxes out at 2TB, supports only 4 primary partitions, and is required for older BIOS systems. Save this post before your next PC build or drive format! ๐ฅ๏ธ๐ฝ

๐ก Ping vs Jitter: low ping = fast connection, low jitter = stable connection. Know both, game/stream lag-free! โก๐ฎ
Ping measures the time it takes for data to travel from your device to a server and back (latency) โ lower is better for gaming, video calls, and browsing. Jitter measures the variation in ping over time โ even with low ping, high jitter causes lag spikes, stutters, and dropped calls. Understanding both helps you diagnose network issues, optimize your connection, and enjoy seamless streaming, gaming, and video conferencing.
