As the segmented ball rotates, the opening changes to regulate the flow. The geometry gives the valve a high capacity flow path while still allowing it to perform as a control valve.

That becomes particularly useful when the process is not carrying something particularly friendly.

Think abrasive media, fibrous material or services where a restricted flow path can quickly become an operational headache.
