Akshara - Crafting Indian Scripts
AKSHARA: Crafting Indian Scripts. An exhibition of artifacts in art, crafts and textiles commissioned and curated by Dastkari Haat Samiti
It is a major exhibition of artifacts in art, crafts and textiles commissioned and curated by Mrs.Jaya Jaitly. The project has been in making for two years now, covering 13 Indian languages, 58 craftspeople, 21 craft skills which cover 16 States of India. We will be displaying over 100 museum quality artifacts. Akshara is a monumental effort to encourage crafts people to be literate, honor their own mother tongues and use scripts as part of design to match up with world calligraphy. We also need to show the world the strength of our languages, particularly since UNESCO is keen to preserve languages all over the world and has a programme whereby they like to see different strategies for doing so. It is truly a unique event and all member Karigars of Dastkari Haat Samiti really feel inspired. Their creations are unique and most have never been done before. Attractions:

With no sales, the crafts sector, one of the biggest source of employment in rural India, is hit hard Just like migrant workers, artisans are also daily workers, and since all markets are shut, they can neither buy raw material, nor sell finished goods. They don’t even have a safety net like provident fund,” says Delhi-based craft revivalist Laila Tyabji of Dastkar.
