VARSHA JALI, design AA-2026-JAL-0001, a new AGES ART concept in Makrana white marble.
Two things get carved in Rajasthan more than almost anything else: jali screens, and fountains. We wanted to make neither. So we asked a different question. What if the perforations in a stone screen were not there to let light through, but to let water out?
In this concept, water rises inside a single slab of Makrana white marble, 2400 x 1800 x 220 mm, and seeps outward through the carved apertures themselves. At the top, where the openings are small and sparse, it releases as separate slow droplets. Lower down, as the aperture field widens and tightens, those droplets merge into one continuous rain veil across the face of the stone. There are no spouts, no jets, no bowls and no figures. A concealed light slot behind the screen rakes upward through the perforations, and because Makrana marble stays dense yet translucent at a thin carved edge, the stone itself glows through the falling water.
The aperture pattern is deliberately not a repeating Mughal lattice. It follows irregular flow lines, so the geometry reads as movement rather than as a motif.
It is meant to work, not only to be looked at: a courtyard screen that cools by evaporation, masks street noise, and filters light.
A question we get asked constantly. Will marble survive outdoors? Yes, when you choose low porosity stone and detail it properly. Most outdoor marble failure is really a drainage, shade and staining problem, not a stone problem. Outdoors, plan on resealing every 3 to 5 years.
